Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear John,

I hope you are doing well. It's been a while since we last caught up. I received your message in which you mentioned that you are looking for a job. I have one job for you that will be suitable for you.

One of my friends is working in the automotive industry. We had a get-together yesterday at my house, and she was telling me that their company is hiring new people. When I got to know that you are also searching for work, I mentioned your name. My friend told me, It's a fast-paced workplace, and they need a person who can work fast and accomplish their targets on time.

I honestly believe that you would be suitable for this job because I remember when we were doing part-time work at Tim Hortons, you worked really fast there. Hence, you can easily get your speed. Besides that, this job offers long term grwoth, financial stability, and more career opportunities.

You can visit compnay's website and apply online. For reference, you can mention my friend's name. I hope you will get this job.

Yours lovingly,

Preet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the job in the automotive industry, explain why your friend is a good fit based on your shared history at Tim Hortons, and provide instructions on how to apply. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the context and the specific action required. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail about the specific nature of the 'fast-paced' tasks to further demonstrate your understanding of the role.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Besides that' and 'Hence' to link ideas. However, the transition between the introduction and the body could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas feels more natural rather than following a strictly mechanical structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'automotive industry', 'fast-paced', and 'financial stability'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'compnay's' and 'grwoth', which are distracting but do not impede communication. The vocabulary is generally appropriate for a semi-formal/informal letter. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. For instance, instead of saying 'I have one job for you', you could use 'I have come across a job opportunity that might suit you'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'When I got to know that you are also searching' (a bit unnatural) and 'you can easily get your speed' (which is unclear in meaning). Punctuation is generally correct, though there are minor issues with comma usage. The majority of the text is error-free, and your meaning is always conveyed successfully. Focusing on more varied sentence structures and refining your use of articles and prepositions would help elevate your score.
