Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Steve,

It feels so good to hear from you after so many years. I remember the last time we met was around two years ago when we completed our graduation in the banking sector. I read about your plans to come back in this country for work now and I am very happy for you.

Here, I would like to recommend you a job in my local area bank as an Investment advisor. This role include many works that you already have information when you were studying like suggesting investment plans to client depending upon their various circumstances.

I think this job is very appropriate for you with regards to your skills and qualifications. By doing this job, you have a very good chance to build your experience as an investment advisor which will later benefit you when you apply in big banking giants or firms. Although, salary is quite average, but, experience is the one that is most important for you currently.

If you are interested in this position, I sent you a link of the bank's recruiting website on your whatsapp. You just have to fill all your personal details in there and attach a resume in word or pdf file. Or, you can also approach, the HR manager through LInkedin. I hope you will consider my request and apply for the vacancy.

Yours Truly

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the role of an investment advisor, explain why it is a good fit based on your friend's background, and provide actionable steps for applying. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the friend's specific skills and the job requirements is slightly more detailed to fully flesh out the 'suitability' aspect.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the greeting and context to the job description, suitability, and finally the application process. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Although' and 'If you are interested', to link ideas. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother in some places. For instance, the jump from the job description to the suitability section is a bit abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words would improve the flow and help the letter feel more cohesive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'investment advisor', 'qualifications', and 'vacancy'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'completed our graduation' (should be 'graduated') and 'big banking giants' (which is slightly redundant). While your meaning is always clear, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The use of 'whatsapp' and 'Linkedin' is acceptable given the informal context, but ensure formal terms are used correctly elsewhere.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'I would like to recommend you a job' should be 'recommend a job to you', and 'This role include' should be 'This role includes'. Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors, such as 'in this country' instead of 'to this country' and 'the HR manager' where 'an' might be more appropriate. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help you achieve a higher score.
