Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Hannah

I am writing to inform you about the job I found on Facebook. It involves the need of a medical laboratory scientist which was the course you studied at Alberta University, Poland. Also you informed me about your need for a job here in my country.

The hospital is located at Main Avenue, not too far from my apartment and the laboratory section just got renovated and some new appliances like a centrifuge, a microscope and an incubator was imported from Japan. It involves kidney function tests, liver function tests, Spirometry, HBsAg and others. I believe this will help to improve your skills in your profession.

The application process is still open and you need to send your curriculum vitae, letter and license to their email address ([redacted email]).

Thank you . I would appreciate if you address this issue promptly and get back to me about their response.

Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the job as a medical laboratory scientist, explain its suitability by linking it to your friend's academic background, and provide specific instructions for the application process. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a friend, although it leans slightly formal in places. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands exactly what is being proposed. To reach a higher band, ensure the tone remains consistently friendly and personal throughout, as the current phrasing feels a bit like a business report in the second paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph addressing a specific requirement of the task. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction of the job to the specific details and finally the application process. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the job description and the hospital details could be smoother. Paragraphing is used correctly, which helps the reader follow the structure of the letter. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect sentences more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using specific terms like 'medical laboratory scientist', 'centrifuge', and 'curriculum vitae'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'the need of a medical laboratory scientist' (should be 'the need for') and 'address this issue' (which sounds overly formal for a friend). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the more natural, idiomatic expressions that would characterize a higher band score. Focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring that your word choices fit the informal context of writing to a friend.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors. For instance, 'some new appliances... was imported' contains a subject-verb agreement error (should be 'were imported'). Additionally, 'I would appreciate if you address' is missing a necessary object ('I would appreciate it if...'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor issues, such as the spacing around the period in 'Thank you .'. Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication, and the message is conveyed effectively.
