Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Joshua,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you about the job search that you were hunting is now fulfilled. I recently saw an advertisement in the newspaper regarding the hiring going on in the cafe.

To begin with, it is the coffee shop which is very convenient to my place. The hiring is for the store manager position. Moreover, the staff is very friendly and every time I go out there with my friends they are very nice and humble towards the customer.

When I saw this vacancy I immediately contacted the store and asked all the details regarding the position. Since you have all the experience regarding the management for past 6 years, I believe you will fit in this position. I handed over your resume to the hiring manager and they shall contact you shortly regarding the job.

Apart from this, I suggest you to visit the cafe by yourself and meet the hiring committee. Moreover apply to this job online as well, surely it will boost your chances for filling up this position. I recommend you to take all your certifications, degree and your food safety level license.

I hope this information is helpful. Looking forward to hear the positive response from your side.

Best wishes,

Ridhima

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the job (store manager at a cafe), explain why it is suitable (the friend's six years of management experience), and provide instructions on how to apply (online application and visiting in person). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the job description and the application process is slightly more seamless, as the current structure feels a bit segmented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Apart from this' to link your sentences. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words or referencing techniques to connect your ideas more fluidly. Overall, the progression of information is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'hiring committee' and 'certifications' are relevant to the context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'job search that you were hunting is now fulfilled' (which is slightly awkward) and 'hiring going on in the cafe' (which could be more naturally phrased as 'a vacancy at the cafe'). While these errors do not impede communication, using more precise collocations would elevate your writing to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I suggest you to visit' (should be 'I suggest that you visit' or 'I suggest visiting') and 'Looking forward to hear' (should be 'Looking forward to hearing'). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and prepositions. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on verb patterns following specific verbs and ensure consistent subject-verb agreement.
