Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear John,
I hope this letter finds you in good health, I’ve recently received your letter, asking about a suitable job for you. I recently came across with a job opening in a marketing company.
This is a full-time Neighborhood Marketing role for a telecommunication company named ‘Bell’. They are looking for someone who can perform door-to-door marketing in the area. It is an outdoor job and requires alot of travel. It generally involves tasks like approaching to potential customers and describe them the company’s offering, satisfy their needs by providing them right solution and closing the sale.
As I remember you are excellent in dealing with people, this job would be a perfect fit you. It would also be a good opportunity to polish your marketing skills in another country. You can also earn some good salary as most of the sales job pays you well.
In order to apply for the job, you can simple visit their website ‘Bell.ca’ or you can send them your resume via email. The last date to apply for the role is Thursday, 27 November.
I wish you best of Luck and Keep in touch.
Kind regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the marketing role, explained why it suits your friend's personality, and provided the necessary application details. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are fully accurate; for instance, the transition from describing the job to explaining the application process is smooth and logical. Overall, the response is complete and fulfills the task requirements effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the job description, the reasoning for the recommendation, and the application instructions. Cohesive devices such as 'As I remember' and 'In order to' are used appropriately to link sentences. However, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the flow. For example, the opening paragraph is a bit abrupt with the comma splice 'I hope this letter finds you in good health, I’ve recently received...'. Using a full stop or a semicolon would improve the structural cohesion of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'full-time', 'potential customers', and 'marketing skills'. There are some minor collocation errors, such as 'came across with' (should be 'came across') and 'approaching to' (should be 'approaching'). Additionally, 'most of the sales job pays you well' contains a subject-verb agreement error. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the use of vocabulary from being considered 'flexible' or 'precise' at the highest level. Focusing on more natural collocations will help improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'alot' (should be 'a lot'), 'describe them the company’s offering' (should be 'describing the company's offerings to them'), and 'simple visit' (should be 'simply visit'). The comma splice in the first sentence also affects the accuracy of your complex structures. While the meaning is always clear, the frequency of these minor errors suggests that you need to pay closer attention to proofreading your work for basic grammatical and punctuation accuracy.
