Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Nihal,
I hope you are doing well. I received your letter and found about your active job hunting activity. I am excited to inform you about a recent job opening in my city that may be helpful for you.
While going for lunch from my job, i saw a job posting about the head chef in the restaurant i usually go for lunch. The position is for one candidate who has experience working in restaurants and have cooking knowledge. The head chef's duties include but not limited to give instructions for cooking specific meals to assistant cooks, manage incoming food orders through order management software, teach new recipes to the staff, prepare special meals for special guests and some cash management at the end of the shift.
As per my knowledge, you would be best fit for the following role as cooking is your passion and you have experience working in restaurants. Moreover, during our study abroad, you also had completed Master Chef's course offered by our collage. I believe, having enough exposure to the industry and proficient knowledge about food making, you would be best fit for this role without doubt.
To apply for this position, you will have to submit your resume to www.cookhere.com and write briefly about your experience on their website following the application. If you got selected, you will receive an interview email. I wish you all the best for this application.
best regards,
Nihal Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the job of a head chef, explained why it is suitable for your friend by referencing their passion and previous course, and provided clear instructions on how to apply. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are fully accurate; for instance, you mentioned 'Master Chef's course' and 'collage' (spelled incorrectly), which are minor points but could be more precisely articulated to enhance the professional tone of the recommendation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which makes the letter easy to follow. You used some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'To apply for this position' to link your ideas effectively. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the transition between sentences is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent and easy to navigate.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'active job hunting activity' and 'order management software' are relevant to the context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and spelling, such as 'collage' instead of 'college' and 'have cooking knowledge' instead of 'has cooking knowledge'. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and ensure precise word usage. The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the position... have cooking knowledge') and minor punctuation slips. You also used 'i' instead of 'I' in several instances, which is a recurring error. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and capitalization will significantly improve your accuracy.
