Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Simran,

I hope you are doing well; its been ages since we last caught up. How have things been going with you and your family? You know what I have a fantastic news for you.

I heard about a job opening here in a local cafe. They need someone who can help taking orders and work in evenings. Although the cafe is small, its very popular for brilliant coffees and sandwiches.

I think this job would be suitable for you because I know how much you love interacting with people. Plus, team is really friendly and polite which is a bonus for you. They also offer health benefits, so you don't need to pay extra for any regular health check ups.

You know what, its very simple hiring process. You can simply apply by visiting their website or I can give you manager's email address, you can send your resume. Lima, she is very nice lady, you'd love to talk to her.

Ring me up if you want to discuss more about it.

Best of luck,

Sukh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly describe the job at the local cafe, explain why it is a good fit for your friend, and provide instructions on how to apply. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal style throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the nature of the work and the benefits involved. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail about the specific tasks involved in the job, such as the types of customers or the specific hours, to further flesh out the content.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Plus', and 'so' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is clear, moving from the greeting and news to the job details, suitability, and finally the application process. To improve, you could use a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to make the flow between sentences feel more sophisticated and less mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'opening', 'interacting', and 'bonus' correctly. The tone is natural and fits the context of a personal letter. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I have a fantastic news' (should be 'some fantastic news') and 'its very simple hiring process' (should be 'it's a very simple'). To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise or descriptive vocabulary related to the workplace and professional communication, while ensuring articles and determiners are used accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. However, there are several recurring grammatical errors, particularly with punctuation and articles. For example, 'its' is used instead of 'it's' (contraction of 'it is') throughout the text. There are also missing articles, such as 'team is really friendly' (should be 'the team') and 'manager's email' (should be 'the manager's email'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and punctuation will significantly improve your accuracy.
