Dear ................. ,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Aastha,

This is in reference to helping you out for the job that you are seeking in my country. Recently, I have heard about this organization that is looking to hire an abroad candidate.

When I first saw this job posting, it perfectly reminded me about you, as they are looking for someone who has a bachelor's degree in science. The job is about software engineering, where they are looking for a person who knows the JAVA++ language. Here, you are going to perform the task for the gaming company to write the code for them to develop a new game.

The amount of knowledge and experience you have will fit like a puzzle in this company for you. You recently mentioned learning a new language too, i.e., Python. This will make you an amazing candidate in this organization. Don't forget the part where you are also gaining the foreign experience.

To apply for this particular application, I will send you the manager's email. Forward your resume and please mention my name as a reference.

Looking forward to hearing some great news.

Thank you

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the software engineering role, explained why the friend's background in science and Python makes them a strong candidate, and provided instructions on how to apply. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the nature of the opportunity and the next steps. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the job requirements and the friend's specific skills is even more explicitly linked to demonstrate a deeper level of task development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the introduction of the job to the justification of suitability and finally the application process. You have used some cohesive devices, such as 'When I first saw' and 'To apply for this particular application', which help guide the reader. However, the transition between paragraphs could be smoother to improve the flow. Some sentences feel slightly disjointed, and the use of cohesive devices is functional rather than sophisticated. Increasing the variety of linking words would enhance the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'perfectly reminded me' and 'fit like a puzzle' are natural and appropriate for an informal letter. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'abroad candidate' (should be 'international candidate' or 'candidate from abroad') and 'JAVA++' (which is not a standard programming language name). While these do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise collocation and technical accuracy. Expanding your vocabulary to include more idiomatic expressions or precise professional terminology would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good control of grammar, with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. There are occasional minor errors, such as 'helping you out for the job' (should be 'helping you with the job') and 'perform the task for the gaming company' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally accurate, and your use of complex sentences shows a good level of grammatical competence. To improve, focus on refining your prepositions and ensuring that your sentence structures are consistently natural and idiomatic.
