Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Malhar,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing you this letter to inform about a job opening near my area. A company named Aero Customs has listed an opening for automotive mechanic.

The requirement for this job are, to carry out diagnosis of the vehicle, carry out general maintenance and repair procedures. With the technical work, the job also demands a general computer knowledge to carry out documentation work. This job also requires good communication skills to interact with customers directly.

As soon as I read about the job online, I was reminded about you. During our college time you were one of the brightest student having both technical and social skills. This job exactly matches your expertise. Moreover, the company is few blocks away from my place, if selected you can stay with me.

Visit the company website I mentioned at the end of the letter to apply for the job. Under career section, there is a posting for automotive technician. I wish you all the best for that job and hope to see you soon

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the job at Aero Customs, explain why your friend is a suitable candidate by referencing their past technical and social skills, and provide instructions on how to apply. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the specific nature of the 'technical work' or the 'documentation' to make the description more vivid and fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the job description to the recommendation and finally the application process. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'As soon as', though the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'diagnosis', 'maintenance', and 'expertise'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'inform about a job opening' (should be 'inform you about') and 'brightest student having' (should be 'brightest students who had'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, incorporating more precise collocations or less common lexical items would help elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The requirement for this job are' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'company is few blocks away' (missing article 'a'). Additionally, 'I am writing you this letter to inform about' is slightly unnatural. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
