Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear John,
I hope everything is going well with your job search. I got your mail yesterday, and I have something that would be suitable for you. I heard from my cousin that the local company called ONGC ( Oil and natural gas corporation ltd.) is looking for people to work. As we studied Environmental management together In Canada, It would work out for you. The company mainly focuses on getting natural gas from the environment and they need people who are flexible to work in different environment while keeping in mind the safety regulations.
Since you have all the safety certifications you are the perfect match for the job. To apply, you can visit their website which is www.ongc.govt.in
If that doesn't works, you can visit their branch in the city. I have mentioned my cousin's number you can call him if you need any help regarding this matter.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly describe the job at ONGC, explain why your friend's background in Environmental Management makes them a suitable candidate, and provide clear instructions on how to apply. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the nature of the work to provide more detail, as the current description is somewhat brief. However, the response is fully relevant and covers all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the job details, suitability, and finally the application process. Paragraphing is used, though the structure could be improved by separating the application instructions into a distinct paragraph. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Since you have' and 'If that doesn't work', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between the job description and the application process is slightly abrupt. Using more varied linking words would improve the overall cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'Environmental management', 'safety regulations', and 'certifications'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'getting natural gas' instead of 'extracting' or 'producing', and 'work out for you' which is a bit informal. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the range of less common or more precise collocations that would be expected at a higher band level. Spelling is generally accurate throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentences. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the local company called ONGC... is looking for people to work' (should be 'to work for them'), 'flexible to work in different environment' (should be 'environments'), and 'If that doesn't works' (should be 'work'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear and communication is not impeded. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and pluralization. The use of punctuation is generally correct, though the placement of the phone number at the end feels a bit disconnected from the sentence structure.
