Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Tim,
I'm writing to you regarding a full time vacancy that recently opened up in my company. They are hiring a recent graduate from a business school.
The position is for customer support representative in a insurance company and its Mon-Fri (9am-5pm) remote. You basically need a high speed internet and a private space to work in. You will get random calls every time and you need to solve the issues that customers are facing day to day.
I believe that you have the quality and communication skills that is most suitable for this job. I have seen you solving conflicts that has happened while we were in school.
To apply for this position, go to www.apply.com and search for the role that I told you. When you see a box for reference you can write my name on it. Hopefully, the hiring manager will reach out by Monday morning.
All the best

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the job role, explain why your friend is a good fit, and provide instructions on how to apply. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful register throughout. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the task requirements. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'why' by providing a more specific example of your friend's professional strengths rather than just mentioning school conflicts, which would add more depth to your recommendation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing, which helps the reader follow your points easily. Each paragraph has a distinct focus. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'To apply for this position' and 'I believe that', to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases. For example, the transition between describing the job and explaining why it is suitable is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of cohesive devices would help the text feel more natural and fluid.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'vacancy', 'representative', and 'hiring manager'. The language is generally clear and appropriate for the context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'random calls' (which sounds slightly unnatural; 'inbound calls' would be more professional) and 'solve the issues' (where 'resolve' or 'troubleshoot' would be more precise). To improve, try to incorporate more specific professional terminology and ensure that collocations sound natural to a native speaker.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For instance, 'its Mon-Fri' should be 'it is Mon-Fri', 'a insurance company' should be 'an insurance company', and 'the quality and communication skills that is' should be 'that are'. Additionally, 'conflicts that has happened' should be 'conflicts that happened'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement and article usage.
