Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sam,

I hope you've settled yourselves in Canada. I got to hear about you desperately looking for a full-time job and I've a good news for you.

You hear it right, Jeez, there is a massive hiring going on in "Sobeys" for Data analyst role. As I know you'll be over the moon learning about this, so I digged a lot into their ads for grabbing more information. This is a beginner-level data analyst position which involves data extraction, manipulation, and making more sense of outcomes using SQL and Python.

As far as how it'll be suitable for you, I think this is a deal breaker no matter due to compensation and health coverage it is offering. Plus, this is something that you were chasing for the whole time you were studying, now comes the opportunity, hit the rock bottom and get this at all costs.

For application, you'll need to look through website, fill it, and submit. That's all. I know you'll get this, and don't forget our pending party which is overdue now.

Lots of Love,

Navjeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the data analyst role, explained why it is suitable for your friend, and provided instructions on how to apply. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the context and the specific opportunity. To reach a higher band, ensure that the advice provided is consistently logical; for instance, the phrase 'hit the rock bottom' is an idiom that actually means to reach the lowest point of a situation, which contradicts your positive intent to encourage your friend to apply for the job.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'As far as how,' 'Plus,' and 'For application,' which help connect your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to transition between sentences more smoothly. The referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression of the letter is logical, moving from the initial news to the job details, the reasons for suitability, and finally the application process.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using industry-specific terms like 'data extraction' and 'manipulation.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'I got to hear about you' is slightly unnatural; 'I heard that you are' would be better. The phrase 'hit the rock bottom' is misused in this context, as it carries a negative connotation. Additionally, 'I digged' is incorrect; the past tense of 'dig' is 'dug.' Improving your control over idiomatic expressions and ensuring correct verb forms will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For instance, 'I've a good news' should be 'I have some good news' (news is uncountable). 'You hear it right' should be 'You heard that right.' There are also minor punctuation and article errors, such as 'in "Sobeys" for Data analyst role,' which should be 'at Sobeys for a data analyst role.' Despite these errors, the communication is not impeded, and the reader can easily understand your message. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will strengthen your writing.
