Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Megh,

I hope you are doing well. I want to congratulate for completing Masters from University of Toronto. It is a huge achievement for professional career.

I inquired about Maintenance Engineer role in nearby Loblaws warehouse in Newmarket, ON. They are looking for a candidate who is comfortable with rotational shift work. Also, having Masters degree is a cherry on a cake.

Moreover, this company is more involved in a automation work with products sorting and transferring it using robots. I knew that you are much interested in this industrial automation related work, so i think this is the best opportunity for you. Company provides great benefits such as discounts and health insurance.

To apply for this position, you have to search for their career website, which is Loblaws/Career.com. Here, you can fill up the online form and later HR will contact for interview process.

I can't wait to see you here. Best of luck!

Yours Lovingly,

Viren Prajapati

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the Maintenance Engineer role, explain why it suits your friend by referencing their interest in industrial automation, and provide instructions on how to apply. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the nature of the job and the application process. To improve further, you could expand slightly on the specific skills required for the role to make the recommendation feel even more personalised and professional.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with a clear progression from the opening to the job details, the reasoning for the recommendation, and finally the application steps. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these distinct ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'To apply for this position' to guide the reader. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are smoother. Some sentences feel slightly disjointed, but the overall structure remains clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'rotational shift work', 'industrial automation', and 'professional career'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'congratulate for completing' (should be 'congratulate you on completing') and 'involved in a automation work' (should be 'involved in automation'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over collocations and prepositions. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated phrases would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'Masters from University' (missing 'a' or 'the'), 'I knew that you are much interested' (should be 'are very interested'), and 'transferring it' (should be 'transferring them' to match 'products'). Punctuation is generally accurate, but there are minor issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. To reach a higher band, focus on reducing these small errors and incorporating a greater variety of complex grammatical structures with more consistent accuracy.
