Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Rui,
I hope you're doing great. It's been a long time since we had a proper chat. Last week I received your letter regarding a job opportunity in my nation and fortunately, I heard about a vacancy in a local organization .
In terms of the job, this is a CNC Machinist position in the Roechling Engineering Plastics company which is located about 10 kilometers away from my hometown. The job duties are very common like, operating a router, housekeeping, troubleshooting, and set-up.
I believe this role is perfect match for you as you have completed your CAD programming diploma in 2025 and you have all the theoretical and practical knowledge about these particular machines which will help you to learn all the function quickly.
Lastly, you can apply for this job on the official website of the company, I have attached all the details such as address, pay-rate, and working hours in this mail so it will be easier for you to get familiar with all the aspects. Also, one of my friend, Jhon, he works there so you can give his name as a reference in your application.
That's all from my side, do let me know if you need any other information regarding this job.
Yours truely,
Sukhman.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the CNC Machinist role, explain why your friend's CAD diploma makes them a suitable candidate, and provide actionable instructions on how to apply. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the friend's specific skills and the job duties is even more explicitly linked to show a deeper level of engagement with the scenario.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which helps the reader follow the narrative easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In terms of', 'I believe', and 'Lastly' to transition between points. While the structure is effective, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat standard. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the referencing within sentences is tighter, particularly in the final paragraph where the sentence structure becomes slightly fragmented.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Terms like 'vacancy', 'theoretical and practical knowledge', and 'reference' are used accurately. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'proper chat' or 'in this mail' (which should be 'in this letter' or 'email'). Additionally, 'Yours truely' contains a spelling error. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would characterize a higher band score. Focusing on more precise collocations will help elevate your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to understand. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'one of my friend, Jhon, he works there', which is a redundant subject construction. Another error is 'learn all the function quickly', where 'function' should be plural. Punctuation is generally good, though there are occasional comma splices, such as in the sentence regarding the company website. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help improve your score in this area.
