Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sara,

It was a really pleasant surprise to receive a letter from you after such a long time. I am glad to know that you are seeking my help in finding a job in my country, India. Recently, I saw the advertisement of a job as a 'Sales Representative' in one of the well known companies and I think it will suit you best.

There's an opening at 'Delta International' which is a telecommunication company and they are hiring foreign nationals who can speak English fluently and have good communication skills as well as have some experience in selling cellphones and internet products.

Let me explain why this job would be suitable for you. To begin with, you have a great fluency in English because you are born and brought up in Canada and the primary language there is English. Secondly, you have 2 years of experience in sales because I know you have worked as a 'Sales Consultant' at 'Rogers communications' and you have sold many internet products for them. Moreover, I am aware that you once received an employee of the month award for your great communication and customer service skills.

To apply for this job, you will have to register yourself on Delta international's careers website which is 'www.deltainternational.com'. Once you will register yourself, you will received a link in your email and through that link you will be able to upload your resume as well as cover letter and hopefully they will call you for an interview within few weeks.

I hope to hear from you soon!

Your friend,

Emma

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the 'Sales Representative' role at 'Delta International', explain why it is a good fit based on your friend's background in Canada and her previous experience at 'Rogers Communications', and provide a clear, step-by-step guide on how to apply via the company website. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, being warm and helpful. All parts of the task are fully developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. No information is missing, and the response is well-focused throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, and you use transition signals such as 'To begin with', 'Secondly', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through your points. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. Referencing is generally clear, and the use of cohesive devices is effective without being overly mechanical. The structure is appropriate for a semi-formal/informal letter, and the paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different requirements of the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary relevant to the context of job hunting and professional skills, such as 'telecommunication', 'fluently', 'communication skills', and 'resume'. The word choices are generally natural and precise. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede meaning. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest band, but it is certainly sufficient for this task. You successfully use specific terminology related to the job description, which adds to the clarity and relevance of your response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'you are born and brought up' (should be 'you were born and brought up') and 'you will received' (should be 'you will receive'). Additionally, 'within few weeks' should be 'within a few weeks'. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and the meaning is never obscured. Your control over punctuation and sentence construction is generally strong, and the errors do not detract from the overall quality of the writing.
