Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Simran,

I hope you are doing great. I am glad to hear that you are planning to move to Canada. I believe this could be the best decision for your future.

I heard from my brother about a dealership company located quite close to my house. The company deals with those individuals who are interested in purchasing used cars. This work involves several responsibilities including providing customer services, dealing with mechanics and promoting vehicles.

I believe this could be a great opportunity to build a strong career. Moreover, I am aware of your excellent communication and management skills, which would help you to perform multiple duties.

To apply for this job, you will need your passport and work authorization letter. In addition, they have an online site to apply which I think is easy to fill your personal information.

I hope my advice will make your application process easier. I would be happy to assist you if you require any further information about the company.

I am looking forward to your prompt response.

Best regards,

Parminder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly describe the job at the car dealership, explain why your friend's skills make them a good fit, and provide instructions on how to apply. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing enough detail to satisfy the prompt requirements. The structure is logical and follows the standard conventions of a personal letter, ensuring the reader understands the purpose of your communication immediately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'I hope' to link your sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall flow of the letter. The transition between the job description and the application process is smooth, and the use of referencing is clear throughout the text, making the letter easy to read and understand.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and naturally. Phrases like 'work authorization letter', 'dealership company', and 'prompt response' are used correctly and fit the context well. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it stays within a relatively standard range. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or sophisticated collocations, such as 'gain valuable experience' instead of 'build a strong career' or 'meticulous attention to detail' when describing skills. Overall, the word choice is effective and there are no errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your grammar is generally accurate, and you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, 'I am aware of your excellent communication and management skills, which would help you to perform multiple duties' is a well-constructed complex sentence. There are very few errors, and those present do not interfere with meaning. Punctuation is used correctly throughout the letter. To improve further, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
