Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Simran,

I hope you are doing great. I am glad to hear that you are planning to move to Canada. I believe this could be the best decision for your future.

I heard from my brother about a dealership located quite close to my house. The company deals with those individuals who are interested in purchasing used cars. This work involves several responsibilities including providing customer services, dealing with mechanics and promoting vehicles.

I believe this could be a great opportunity to build a strong career. Moreover, I am aware of your excellent communication and management skills, which would help you to perform multiple duties.

To apply for this job, you will need your passport and work authorization letter. In addition, they have an online site to apply which I think is easy to fill out personal information.

I hope my advice will make your application process easier. I would be happy to assist you if you require any further information about the company.

I am looking forward to your prompt response.

Best regards,

Parminder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the job at the car dealership, explain why your friend's communication and management skills make them a strong candidate, and provide instructions on how to apply. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands the nature of the opportunity and the necessary steps to pursue it. The response is well-structured and fulfills all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow the narrative easily. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'To apply for this job' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The flow between the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion is smooth and natural, demonstrating a good command of organizational structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dealership', 'responsibilities', 'purchasing', and 'work authorization'. The language is natural and fits the context of a friendly letter. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to reach a higher band. For example, instead of 'easy to fill out', you could use 'straightforward to complete'. Overall, the vocabulary is precise enough to convey your message without any confusion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your grammar is generally accurate, and you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and the few minor slips do not impede communication. For instance, 'The company deals with those individuals who are interested in purchasing used cars' is a well-constructed complex sentence. You show good control over punctuation and verb tenses. To improve, ensure consistent subject-verb agreement and refine the use of articles, though your current level is quite strong and demonstrates a good command of English grammar.
