Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Smit,

Hope you are doing well; by the way I want to inform you that there’s a position in my Walmart and as we had a conversation last time you mentioned about hiring in my neighbourhood. While studying at Algonquin college in Ottawa we were not only friends but also the colleagues so I know you are hardworking.

The position is for the grocery associate in the day time wherein you are supposed to fill the empty shelves and make the products available to the customer. Apart from this an associate is asked to help the customers during the shift finding the products and also arranging the packages in proper manner. Also if you are power lift trained you may have to work on the bulk skids in the backroom wherein, employee had to put the overstock products on the top shelfs and accommodate other things in the Walmart.

Let me know if you are interested in this job then, I can talk to my manager about you and also I can share you my details which you can add to the reference. Despite of this, I will also apply for you as my referral so I can convey my output to the Walmart and the hiring manger about your skills.

Warm regards,

Punam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the grocery associate role, explained why your friend would be a good fit based on your shared history at college, and provided instructions on how to apply via a referral. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To reach a higher band, ensure that the description of the job duties is slightly more polished and avoid minor inaccuracies in the explanation of the referral process, as the phrasing 'convey my output' is slightly unclear in this context.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Apart from this' and 'Despite of this', though the latter is used incorrectly as a transition. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the job description from the application process. To improve, work on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother, as some sentences feel slightly disjointed due to the repetitive structure of the opening clauses.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'grocery associate', 'bulk skids', and 'overstock'. However, there are some noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'mention about hiring' (should be 'mention hiring') and 'convey my output' (which is unnatural). Additionally, 'Despite of this' is a common error; 'Despite this' or 'In addition to this' would be more accurate. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use relative clauses, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'employee had to put' (should be 'employees have to put') and 'top shelfs' (should be 'shelves'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences, such as the opening sentence. The majority of your sentences are understandable, but the frequency of these minor errors prevents a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and pluralization to improve your accuracy.
