Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear John,
I hope you are doing well! I am glad hearing from you and happy to help you. I have received your email regarding job opportunities and I am writing to inform you about job opening in my vicinity.
When we were in college we studied Supply Chain Management from Fleming college and I still remember that you were phenomenal in Negotiations and in communication. Moreover, I also remember that you won serval debate competitions and always eager to learn new skills. My co-work informed me that our neighboring plant is hiring for Buyer position.
I went through the job description and yes you meet all the requirements. The job demands 3 years of experience in the same field. In terms of skills they are looking someone having knowledge of Inco terms, Custom broker , Purchasing FIFO and customer service skills. On top of that, it is a hybrid job. About qualification they need certification in Supply chain.
After considering all the points, I feel like you are the perfect candidate as you have all the skill sets and have been working as a buyer for 5 years.
I would recommend you first make your linkedln profile. After that, visit Siemens website, look for career options. Under career select Canada as location. You will see the buyer position apply for that.
I am more than happy to be your reference. So, you can put my name under reference.
Enjoy, keep in touch and I will let you know if any other vacancy pops up.
Your faithfully,
Pri

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly describe the job at the local company, explain why your friend is a suitable candidate based on their background, and provide a clear, step-by-step guide on how to apply. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. All parts of the prompt are covered well, and the ideas are developed sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with a clear progression from the initial greeting to the job description, the candidate's suitability, and finally the application instructions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate these distinct ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On top of that', and 'After considering all the points', which help the flow. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the connection between sentences could be smoother in the second paragraph to achieve a more natural, native-like flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including industry-specific terms like 'Supply Chain Management', 'Inco terms', and 'FIFO'. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it lacks the sophistication and variety required for a higher band. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'serval' (spelling error for 'several') and 'co-work' (should be 'colleague'). Despite these, the meaning is always clear, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'I am glad hearing from you' (should be 'to hear'), 'job opening in my vicinity' (missing article 'a'), and 'looking someone' (missing preposition 'for'). Additionally, 'Your faithfully' is an incorrect closing for a letter to a friend; 'Yours sincerely' or 'Best wishes' would be more appropriate. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and the overall meaning remains clear throughout the letter.
