Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Kevin,

I hope you are doing great my friend, it's been a long time since we hung out the way we used to do while studying at the University of Portsmouth. Well, I am delighted to know that you are seeking an opportunity to work full-time in Canada. I have recently discovered from a friend of mine about an opening position of Data Analyst at CIBC bank in Toronto city.

And, I feel that you would be a perfect candidate for them to hire. Because, you have not only a Master's degree in data science but also gained relevant work experience. Moreover, having Data Visualization certificate will boost your resume to pass the ATS screening in order to get selected for an interview.

Now you must be thinking of how to apply, specifically in banking companies such as CIBC, but don't worry unlike other tech companies they have created their own job portal where you will have to create an applicant account to complete your application by submitting all the transcripts.

Again, I can't wait any more to meet you in-person and to make plans to explore the cities of Canada with you all over again. Also, please let me know if you need any further help during filling up the application form.

Your Friend,

Kishan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the Data Analyst role at CIBC, explain why your friend's background in data science and his certificate make him a strong candidate, and provide clear instructions on how to apply via the company portal. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and supportive register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. No parts of the task are omitted, and the information provided is relevant and helpful.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your train of thought easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Now', and 'Again' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal-informal letter structure. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest band, but the overall structure is coherent and easy to navigate.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context, such as 'seeking an opportunity', 'perfect candidate', and 'ATS screening'. The language is natural and fits the professional yet friendly tone required. There are a few minor collocation issues, such as 'opening position' (should be 'open position' or 'job opening') and 'during filling up' (should be 'while filling out'). However, these do not impede communication. You successfully use topic-specific vocabulary related to job hunting, which adds precision to your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over grammar is generally strong. There are a few minor slips, such as 'I can't wait any more to meet you' (a bit unnatural; 'I can't wait to meet you' is better) and the punctuation in the second paragraph ('Because, you have...'). Despite these occasional inaccuracies, your meaning is always clear, and the variety of structures used shows a good command of English grammar.
