Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Kevin,

I hope you are doing great my friend, it's been a long time since we hung out the way we used to do while studying at the University of Portsmouth. Well, I am delighted to know that you are seeking an opportunity to work full-time in Canada. I have recently discovered from a friend of mine about an opening vacancy for a position of Data Analyst at CIBC bank in Toronto city.

And, I feel that you would be a perfect candidate for them to hire. This is because, you have not only a Master's degree in data science but also relevant work experience, you would be a perfect candidate. Moreover, having Data Visualization certificate will boost your resume to pass the ATS screening in order to get selected for an interview.

Now you must be thinking of how to apply, specifically in banking companies such as CIBC, but don't worry unlike other tech companies they have created their own job portal where you will have to create an applicant account to complete your application by submitting all the transcripts.

Again, I can't wait any more to meet you in-person and to make plans to explore the cities of Canada with you all over again. Also, please let me know if you need any further help with filling up the application form.

Your Friend,

Kishan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the job at CIBC, explained why your friend is a suitable candidate by referencing his qualifications, and provided instructions on how to apply via the company portal. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a warm and helpful persona throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. There are no omissions, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have effectively balanced the informational requirements with the personal nature of the correspondence.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your train of thought easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'This is because', and 'Now you must be thinking' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal-informal letter. While the transition between the second and third paragraphs is functional, the overall flow is smooth and natural, contributing to a coherent piece of writing that is easy to read.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context, such as 'seeking an opportunity', 'relevant work experience', and 'ATS screening'. You use some less common collocations effectively. However, there are minor inaccuracies, such as 'opening vacancy' (a vacancy is an opening; 'a job opening' or 'a vacancy' would be more natural) and 'filling up' (the phrasal verb 'filling out' is more standard for forms). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message with precision and style, and the errors do not impede communication at all.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional and relative clauses. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. There are a few minor slips, such as the repetitive phrasing in the second paragraph ('you would be a perfect candidate' appears twice) and a slight awkwardness in 'I can't wait any more to meet you'. However, these do not interfere with meaning. Your use of verb tenses is accurate, and the overall grammatical control is strong, fitting the requirements for a high band score.
