Dear ................. ,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mike, Hope you are doing good. I am writing this to let you know about the job opportunity that I have heard about and also help you in applying for this job.

So, the job role is about testing new gadgets/toys and giving feedback explaining the products' pros and cons, which I thought would perfectly suit you, as you are always interested in toys and gadgets since childhood.

To apply for this role, you can find their contact on their website and send your resume to the email provided. You will get a call once they have your resume screened.

Let me know how you feel about this role and if you are applying for this job.

Convey my regards to your parents and hope to meet you soon.

Regards,

JK.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the job, explaining why it is suitable, and providing application instructions. However, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum, which limits the development of ideas. The description of the job is brief, and the explanation of why it suits the friend is somewhat generic. To achieve a higher band, you should expand on the details of the work environment or the specific skills required, and provide more depth regarding your friend's background to better justify the recommendation. The tone is appropriate for a friend, but the brevity prevents a fully developed response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized logically, with a clear opening, body paragraphs covering the required points, and a closing. Ideas are sequenced well enough for the reader to follow the message easily. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited; the text relies on simple transitions like 'So' and 'To apply for this role'. A more sophisticated range of linking words and better paragraph structure would improve the flow. The paragraphing is functional, but the overall structure feels a bit disjointed due to the short length of the paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. Phrases like 'doing good' (should be 'doing well') and 'job role' are functional but basic. There is little attempt to use less common or more idiomatic language that would demonstrate a wider range. While the meaning is always clear, the lexical choices do not show the flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding your vocabulary to include more descriptive adjectives and professional collocations would significantly enhance your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'you are always interested in toys and gadgets since childhood' (should be 'have always been interested'). Punctuation is generally correct, but the sentence variety is limited. While the errors do not impede communication, the lack of more complex, error-free structures keeps the score in the mid-range. Focusing on consistent verb tense usage and incorporating a wider variety of sentence types would improve your score.
