Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear John,

How are you? I hope you are doing well. I am glad to hear that we stayed in touch after completing our study abroad together.

To begin with, you asked me to keep an eye out for a local job. I actually have good news for you. A tech company is hiring a marketing coordinator. The work involves managing their social media page, writing vlogs and assisting with online advertisements.

I think this is great fit for you. As during our studies, you are always led our group projects with brilliant ideas and strong writing skills. Manager also wants value remote flexibility which you are looking for.

To apply for this job, you need to send your resume and cover letter online through the website. Additionally, you can also send me so I can also hand your CV directly into the office if you want.

I am looking forward your response about this job and we can catch on video call soon.

Best wishes,

Navjot

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The candidate has successfully covered all three bullet points required in the prompt. First, the letter clearly tells the friend about the job opening as a marketing coordinator at a tech company, detailing specific responsibilities such as managing social media pages, writing vlogs, and assisting with online advertisements. Second, it explains why the role is suitable by referencing past group projects and highlighting the candidate's leadership, brilliant ideas, and strong writing skills, alongside noting the remote flexibility required. Third, it outlines the application process clearly by mentioning online submission via website and offering an alternative method of hand-delivering the CV directly into the office. The tone is appropriate for a friend, and all parts of the task are well-developed and addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear overarching progression. Ideas are grouped appropriately into paragraphs, starting with a friendly opening, followed by details of the job, reasons for suitability, application instructions, and a closing remark. Cohesive devices are used adequately and logically, such as 'To begin with', 'Additionally', and transitional phrases. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, reflecting the informal letter format well. Although paragraph breaks could occasionally be smoother, referencing and logical flow are well managed throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student uses a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary suitable for an informal recommendation letter. Phrases such as 'marketing coordinator', 'remote flexibility', 'resume and cover letter', and 'hand your CV directly' demonstrate a good control of general and professional vocabulary. There are occasional minor word choice and collocation slips, such as writing 'As during our studies, you are always led our group projects' instead of 'led', and 'I am looking forward your response' missing the preposition 'to'. However, these lexical errors do not impede communication, and the overall range allows for clear and precise expression.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating decent grammatical control. Complex structures are attempted successfully, such as in 'I am glad to hear that we stayed in touch after completing our study abroad together' and 'Additionally, you can also send me so I can also hand your CV directly'. However, there are some noticeable grammatical errors, notably tense and verb form inconsistencies like 'you are always led our group projects' and the missing preposition in 'looking forward your response'. Punctuation is generally accurate, and while these errors occasionally disrupt fluency, they rarely impede communication.
