Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sam,
Hope you are doing splendidly! It's been since we caught up with each other. So I thought I would get the ball rolling with some pleasant tidings. I would like to provide you with some good news about employment in India, which you were searching for a long time.
The organization is hiring a person who is familiar with the topics of sales and marketing, and I guess you are the right person to get employed. Furthermore, it involves working with clients and explain them about their products and meet the specific targets of gaining customers, which will be determined by the employer. Hence, it's an office job where you are supposed to work five days a week, plus overtime if necessary.
I have been observing you since two years where you demonstrate strong communication, problem solving and leadership skills, which will make you the suitable candidate based on the job description. Additionally, you even have one year of experience in brand marketing that will eventually be considered as an asset. Therefore, this will assist the company to meet their goals efficiently.
The organization only accepts online applications, which you can directly submit it through their website at www.deloitte.com. However, if the website is not responding, then you can apply on LinkedIn.
I wish you the best of luck throughout the process, and I'm confident that you will be successful in cracking the job. Let me know if you have any questions.
Best regards,
Rayan.

| Criterion | Band |

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. You clearly introduce the job at Deloitte involving sales and marketing, explain why your friend Sam is suitable due to his communication skills and previous brand marketing experience, and accurately outline the application procedure via their website or LinkedIn. The tone is appropriately friendly and conversational, fulfilling the requirements of a General Training Task 1 letter. The ideas are adequately developed, and all parts of the prompt are addressed well. While some points could be slightly more elaborated, the overall response fully satisfies the task requirements and earns a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
Your letter has a clear overall progression and logical organisation. The structure moves naturally from an introductory greeting and the announcement of the job, to the job details, suitability, and finally application instructions. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas, such as grouping the job description and your friend's qualifications into separate paragraphs. You employ cohesive devices like 'Furthermore', 'Hence', 'Additionally', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or overused. Referencing is generally clear, resulting in a cohesive and easily readable piece of writing that fits the Band 7 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common lexical items such as 'splendidly', 'tidings', and 'brand marketing'. There are occasional lapses in word choice and collocation, such as 'explain them about their products' (instead of 'explain their products to them') and 'cracking the job' (which is overly colloquial compared to 'landing the job'). However, your vocabulary is varied enough to convey precise meanings, and spelling and word formation are generally accurate. These minor slips prevent the piece from reaching a higher band, but comfortably secure a Band 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising structures such as 'which you were searching for a long time' and 'which will make you the suitable candidate'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, including 'It's been since we caught up' (missing a time duration), 'explain them' (missing a preposition), and 'since two years' (should be 'for two years'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and you maintain good control over overall punctuation and sentence boundaries. This performance aligns well with the criteria for Band 6.0.
