Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Jay,

I hope you are doing well. I recently received your letter to assist you finding a job in India. I perfectly remember our conversation and hostel days memories from the University of Ottawa.

Firstly, I have an excellent news for you as my company is hiring a chemical technologist. The daily responsibility includes prepare and calculate raw materials, optimise the process and reduce emissions, and supervise technician and workers. The role also demands lifting items upto 20 pounds.

Secondly, I remember your academic skills in Maths, Science and Process Engineering subjects were outstanding. Furthermore, I believe you are a perfect fit for this role as your soft skills such as presentation and report writing, and project management skills are required to be successful.

I am sharing the job posting link with you. I would suggest you to write my email address and full name in reference section. I will share your resume and cover letter with the recruiter and a hiring manager too. Should you require more details or documents, I am happy to assist you further.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Neel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The candidate has successfully covered all parts of the task prompt in a natural and appropriate tone. The letter begins with a friendly opening and immediately addresses the three bullet points required in General Training Task 1. First, the writer details the job as a chemical technologist, describing daily responsibilities such as preparing raw materials, optimising processes, and supervising workers. Second, the response clearly explains why the role is suitable by highlighting the friend's academic background in Maths, Science, and Process Engineering, alongside relevant soft skills. Third, the procedure for applying is clearly explained, including sharing the job posting link, putting the writer down as a reference, and offering to pass the resume directly to the recruiter and hiring manager. The tone is consistently polite and helpful throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas from the friendly greeting to the job description, suitability, application instructions, and a warm closing. Paragraphing is used effectively and appropriately, with each main point separated into its own distinct paragraph. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Furthermore' are used naturally to signpost the structure of the letter. Referencing is clear throughout, for instance when using pronouns to link ideas about the job requirements back to the friend's qualifications. Overall, the cohesion supports the communicative purpose of the letter smoothly without attracting negative attention.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a good range of vocabulary appropriate for both informal letter-writing and professional contexts. The writer successfully uses domain-specific terms such as 'chemical technologist', 'raw materials', 'optimise the process', 'reduce emissions', and 'soft skills'. There are occasional minor lexical inaccuracies, such as 'an excellent news' (where 'news' is uncountable and should be 'some excellent news' or 'great news') and 'prepare and calculate' instead of 'preparing and calculating' for parallelism. However, the range is sufficiently flexible and precise to convey detailed professional and personal information effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The student uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses. There are several error-free sentences, such as 'I recently received your letter to assist you finding a job in India' (though 'finding' should be 'in finding') and 'I would suggest you to write my email address'. Grammar and punctuation control is generally good, but there are a few noticeable slip-ups: 'assist you finding' instead of 'assist you in finding', 'an excellent news', and 'upto' (should be 'up to'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the grammar does not impede communication at any point, and meaning is conveyed with clarity.
