Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Jass
I hope this letter finds you in good spirits. I am writing to inform you about the new position that just opened up at Stone Manor- a long term care home.
Actually, it's the recreation aide job. The job is permanent full- time and timing is from 9 am to 5pm, as you preferred. Basically, the work includes planning and doing daily recreational programs with the older adults living at the facility.
I think this position is best suite for you as you have completed the two year Recreation Therapy program. Also, I know, you love to do fun activities.
So, the application process is very simple. You can easily access the website of organization and look for this specific job. Once you submitted the form. The hiring team will get back to you. I suggest you to collect all the essentials documents you might need such as Vulnerable sector check, TB test.
Wishing you good luck and hoping to hear from you soon.
Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response covers all three bullet points from the prompt effectively and clearly. You successfully introduced the friend to the job at Stone Manor as a recreation aide, explained what the work entails such as planning daily recreational programs, and stated why the job is suitable based on the two-year Recreation Therapy program. Furthermore, you explained how to apply by visiting the website and gathering documents like a Vulnerable Sector Check. The tone is entirely appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and helpful persona throughout. The purpose of the letter is fully achieved without any missing components, demonstrating solid communicative effectiveness in a General Training context.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, such as job details, suitability, and the application process. Cohesive devices are used adequately, for instance, phrases like 'Actually, it's' and 'Also, I know'. However, paragraphing and transitions could be slightly smoother, as some sentences appear somewhat abrupt or isolated, such as 'Also, I know, you love to do fun activities.' Paragraph transitions are functional and easy to follow, allowing the reader to navigate the letter without difficulty, representing a solid standard of organisation.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You use an adequate and mostly natural range of vocabulary suitable for an informal letter. Terms like 'recreation aide', 'permanent full-time', 'recreational programs', and 'Vulnerable sector check' show relevant and precise topic-specific vocabulary. There are a few minor errors in word choice or phrasing, such as 'best suite for you' (should be 'best suited') and 'essentials documents' (should be 'essential documents'). Nevertheless, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and appropriately, fulfilling the requirements for this band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing to inform you about the new position that just opened up...' and 'Once you submitted the form, the hiring team will get back to you.' There are a few grammatical errors and awkward punctuation points, such as 'Once you submitted the form. The hiring team...' where a fragment/tense shift occurs ('submitted' instead of 'submit'), and minor punctuation issues like the missing hyphen in 'long term' and 'full- time'. Despite these lapses, communication is never impeded, and the majority of simple sentences are accurate.
