Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sarah,
I hope you are doing well. It was great to hear from you, and I am happy to help you with your job search here.
I recently heard that a local company, ABC Marketing, is looking for a customer service assistant. The position involves responding to customers’ enquiries, handling phone calls and emails, processing basic orders, and helping clients resolve any problems they may have. It is a full-time position, with regular working hours from Monday to Friday.
I think this job would suit you particularly well because you have excellent communication skills and gained valuable experience dealing with people while we were studying abroad. You are also patient, organised and confident when working as part of a team, which are important qualities for this position.
To apply, you should visit the company’s website and complete the online application form. You will also need to upload your CV and a brief cover letter. Applications close on 25 September, so I suggest applying as soon as possible. If you would like, I can also check your CV before you submit it.
Best wishes,
Dechen

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 9.0
The response fully and effectively addresses all bullet points outlined in the task instructions. The student clearly describes the job at ABC Marketing, including specific duties such as responding to enquiries and processing orders. Next, the letter thoroughly explains why the job is suitable for Sarah by highlighting her communication skills, previous international study experience, and personal traits like patience and organization. Finally, the application process is clearly outlined, mentioning the online form, CV upload, and application deadline of 25 September. The tone is entirely appropriate for a friendly letter, and the purpose is well-sustained throughout. All requirements are met with strong development of ideas, warranting a top band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter exhibits clear logical organisation and natural progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, with each paragraph addressing a distinct aspect of the prompt: an opening greeting and introductory remarks, details about the job role, justification of suitability, and clear application instructions followed by a closing. Cohesive devices such as 'recently', 'particularly well', and 'To apply' are used naturally and unobtrusively to guide the reader. Referencing is consistently clear, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas seamlessly, ensuring high readability and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient and natural range of vocabulary suitable for a general correspondence task. Phrases such as 'customer service assistant', 'responding to customers' enquiries', and 'online application form' are used accurately. There is also a successful attempt at less common and topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'processing basic orders' and 'submit it'. Word choice and collocations are generally precise and natural throughout, with no spelling or lexical errors present. The vocabulary comfortably meets the criteria for Band 7, displaying good control over everyday and workplace-oriented terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The response features a wide range of grammatical structures, successfully blending simple sentences with well-constructed complex clauses. Examples include 'I recently heard that a local company, ABC Marketing, is looking for a customer service assistant' and 'I think this job would suit you particularly well because you have excellent communication skills'. The vast majority of sentences are completely error-free, demonstrating excellent control over verb tenses, relative clauses, and punctuation. The control of grammar aligns closely with the descriptors for Band 8, as only rare, negligible flaws could conceivably be debated, and communication is exceptionally clear.
