Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student covers all bullet points of the prompt clearly and appropriately for a general training letter. The opening introduces a friendly tone and mentions the job vacancy in the business firm. The response then accurately describes the job role as a junior salesperson involving customer management and securing sales. Furthermore, the writer explains why it suits the friend by referring to past internship experience and business skills. Finally, clear instructions on how to apply online via the career page are provided. The purpose of the letter is well-maintained with a consistent friendly register. All parts are addressed adequately, placing this comfortably in Band 7.0 according to the task response descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression. The layout is divided into manageable paragraphs representing the required bullet points. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'During our time studying together,' and 'Let me know when you apply so i can...' However, there are minor cohesion and punctuation flaws, such as missing capitalisation at the start of sentences and lowercase 'i' pronouns throughout. Paragraphing could also be slightly more developed to separate distinct ideas more fluidly. Overall, the arrangement is coherent, earning a Band 6.5 for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'vacancy', 'internship', and 'cover letter'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('bussiness' instead of business, 'manely' instead of mainly, 'quicl' instead of quick) and minor word-choice inaccuracies like 'Sales Man' instead of salesperson. These lexical errors do not impede communication since the overall meaning remains entirely clear. The vocabulary matches the Band 6 descriptor well, as it shows a sufficient range and attempts less common words despite minor spelling slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and relative clauses like 'I hope your doing well and that life back home is treating you nicely.' There are grammatical and punctuation errors present, notably 'your' instead of 'you're', missing apostrophes, and a persistent failure to capitalise the pronoun 'I' and the beginnings of sentences. While these errors are noticeable, they represent a mix of accurate and flawed structures that rarely impede the reader's understanding. This performance aligns closely with the Band 6 criteria for grammatical range and accuracy.
