Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sam,

I hope you're doing well. It was great to know you want to pursue your career in my country. I'm glad you asked me to help for find a job in the electrical field.

Recently, I saw a job opening in the Havels Electrical on Indeed. They are looking for an electrical engineer who has a vast knowledge of electrical equipment. The job duties involve PLC programming, machines testing, preventive maintenance of machines and troubleshooting. Apart from these, they want someone who are willing to do overtime when required.

I believe you would be the suitable candidate for this job opportunity for several reasons. Firstly, you have been working in the electrical department for five years. In addition, as I know you have hands-on experience with PLC programming and automation. You have good communication skills which makes you best candidate for this job.

You can apply for this job opening through Indeed or you can apply from their official website. I'll provide you the website link shortly. If you want I would happy to submit you resume in person. Let me know if you find any problem while submit your application.

I look forward to your response.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The response fully covers all parts of the task prompt in an appropriate semi-formal tone suitable for a letter to a friend. You successfully mention the job at Havels Electrical and describe the specific duties involved, such as PLC programming and preventive maintenance. Furthermore, you clearly explain why your friend would be a suitable candidate by highlighting his five years of experience in the electrical department and relevant skills. Finally, you explain how to apply through Indeed or the official website and offer helpful personal assistance. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the ideas are well-developed throughout. This meets the criteria for a strong performance on this task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear and appropriate progression of ideas from the initial greeting to the closing. Paragraphing is used effectively, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt, such as job details, suitability, and the application process. Cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'Apart from these' are utilized appropriately to connect ideas and maintain smooth transitions. Referencing is generally clear and easy to follow, making the letter cohesive and readable throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate and functional range of vocabulary appropriate for discussing professional engineering roles, using terms such as 'preventive maintenance', 'troubleshooting', and 'automation'. However, there are some minor lexical and grammatical slips in word choice, such as writing 'help for find' instead of 'help to find' or 'help finding', and referring to 'the Havels Electrical' rather than just 'Havels Electrical'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and precisely to the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, showing an ability to construct compound and complex sentences effectively. Most sentences are grammatically sound and easy to understand. However, there are a few noticeable grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement in 'someone who are willing' (should be 'is') and a missing preposition in 'if you find any problem while submit your application' (should be 'submitting'). Punctuation is generally accurate, and these minor errors do not impede communication.
