Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Raman,

I Hope this letter finds you in radiant health and the best of spirits. I recently received your letter in which you have mentioned that you are looking for a job in Canada.

Last week, i read in the newspaper that a local company in Brampton named Meta is hiring for full time employees. They are looking for the candidates who are good in sorting and packing. One year experience in Automobile company is an assest that you already have in Canadian company.

I think this job is best for you because you have a good hand in sorting as well as a year of experience in the same field. Moreover, You have strong communication skills which are mandatory to have for a job seeker. Apart from it, your study in college was also related to business and you have a theortical knowledge about how to work cooperately in a team.

[redacted email] is the gmail of the company and you can send your resume on it. If you need any further information please feel free to contact me anytime. Hope to hear a good news from you soon.

Yours lovingly,

Ravjot Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the task. You tell your friend about the job at Meta in Brampton and explain that it involves sorting and packing. You also state why the job is suitable, mentioning relevant experience and communication skills, and explain how to apply by sending a resume to the provided email address. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the description of the job and the suitability are well-covered, but the explanation of the application process is brief and lacks detail. To reach a higher level, all parts of the task need to be equally extended and supported throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear friendly tone and logical progression from greeting to closing. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate different aspects of the letter, such as the job details, suitability, and application method. Cohesive devices are generally present, though some referencing and transitions feel a bit mechanical, such as 'Apart from it'. Furthermore, paragraphing conventions for informal letters could be managed more naturally. To achieve a higher band, the transitions between ideas would need to be smoother and referencing would need to be consistently clear throughout the entire piece.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended message. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary and appropriate phrases, such as 'radiant health', 'theortical knowledge', and 'cooperately'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'assest' instead of 'asset', 'theortical' instead of 'theoretical', 'cooperately' instead of 'cooperatively', and a lowercase 'i' instead of 'I'. These lexical inaccuracies and minor spelling mistakes do not impede communication, placing the response right in the middle range for vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as the use of conditional structures and relative clauses. There are some grammatical errors in articles, prepositions, and punctuation, including 'hiring for full time employees' instead of 'hiring full-time employees', 'good in sorting' instead of 'good at sorting', and unnecessary capitalisation in 'You have strong communication skills'. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily understand your meaning. To improve, you need to increase control over complex structures and eliminate basic grammatical slips.
