Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Khushi,
Hopefully, you and your husband are doing great by the grace of god. I am writing this letter to inform you about a job posting that might be suitable for you to apply for.
Currently, one of my friends has bought a new restaurant. He is looking for genuine and hardworking people, so I thought that might suit you better. This job involves taking customers' orders and requires good communication skills.
The position for this role is flexible, which may work well with your studies. Additionally, the restaurant is close to my accommodation, so I can help you if you need any support.
To apply for this position, you just need to come in for a walk-in interview or send your resume with a cover letter to the restaurant manager via email. If you need a contact number or an email I can get it for you.
Hopefully, you will get this job without any problems. Please let me know if you need any kind of assistance with this.
Kind regards,
Kevin

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all bullet points of the prompt, satisfying the requirements for a friendly letter. You clearly tell your friend Khushi about the restaurant job and explain that it involves taking customer orders. You also state why the position is suitable, mentioning that the flexible hours fit well with her studies. Furthermore, you explain the application process by suggesting a walk-in interview or emailing the resume. While all parts of the task are addressed, some ideas remain slightly basic and could benefit from further extension and detail to reach the highest standard. For instance, the explanation of the work duties and the specific benefits of the job are concise rather than fully expanded. However, your purpose is completely clear throughout, and the tone is appropriate for a friend.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You begin with an appropriate friendly opening, smoothly transition into the main purpose of the email in the second paragraph, discuss practical details in the third and fourth paragraphs, and close with a warm, supportive sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct topic, such as the job details, suitability, and application methods. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as 'Additionally' to introduce a supporting point and 'To apply for this position' to signal the final requirement. Referencing is clear throughout, ensuring the reader can easily follow your train of thought.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message with common terms and attempting some less common phrases like 'genuine and hardworking people', 'flexible', and 'accommodation'. Word choice and spelling are generally sound, allowing for smooth communication, although there are some minor awkward phrasings. For example, writing that 'one of my friends has bought a new restaurant' is natural, but phrases like 'The position for this role is flexible' could be expressed with greater precision, as a role itself is usually filled by a person rather than being flexible. To achieve a higher level, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations and precise idiomatic expressions suited to informal correspondence.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You display a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over your grammatical structures. There are frequent error-free sentences, such as 'He is looking for genuine and hardworking people, so I thought that might suit you better' and 'If you need a contact number or an email I can get it for you.' Punctuation and verb tenses are handled well overall, and prepositions are generally used correctly within common patterns. A few minor slips occur, such as the informal opening phrase 'by the grace of god', but these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure your intended meaning. Your command of sentence variety allows the letter to flow naturally.
