Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Rita,
I am writing this letter to you to answer your questions on how to get a job in Asaba. Asaba is a land filled with promise and dreams, and it will really favour you. Lucky for you there is a vacany at NTA (Nigeria Television Authority) the Asaba station obviously.
To begin with, the opening is for a journalist and its is for a little while, in the job description It said they needed a temporary staff who will be paid till they find a permanent solution for the company. I mean that is so perfect and let's not forget that you are an english major at Harvard University. Also the job entails that you help in news gathering and the production of the news. You will not be casting news on Television, just the production and gathering which isn't a hassle if you consider the pay.
In addition, to these you have to mail your CV to the company website, which I will forward to you and if you are selected you have to go to their office for an interview.
It was so nice for you to reach out and I can not wait for your response.
Yours Sincerely,
Kate.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all requirements of the prompt by telling Rita about the temporary journalism job at NTA, explaining why it suits her background as an English major at Harvard, and detailing the application process through the company website. The communication purpose is clearly met, adopting an appropriate semi-formal letter format. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or casually expressed, such as the informal remark about the pay and the brief explanation of the application steps. To reach a higher band, the response would need to fully develop all ideas with more elaboration and extension, ensuring every bullet point is thoroughly explored without leaning on colloquial asides.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning, middle, and end, moving logically from the job introduction to its suitability and finally the application steps. Paragraphing is used to separate main ideas, though the transitions between paragraphs rely on somewhat mechanical cohesive devices such as 'To begin with' and 'In addition, to these'. Referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression could be smoother. To achieve a higher band, the student would need to use cohesive devices more flexibly and unobtrusively, ensuring that the flow between sentences and paragraphs feels entirely natural rather than formulaic.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended message with terms such as 'temporary staff', 'news gathering', and 'production'. There are some spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'vacany' instead of 'vacancy' and the awkward phrasing 'its is for a little while', but these do not impede communication. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but occasional inaccuracies in collocation and word form prevent higher achievement. To improve, the student should expand their range of precise professional terminology and eliminate basic spelling mistakes through careful proofreading.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully using structures like relative clauses ('who will be paid') and conditional-like phrasing. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing commas after introductory phrases ('In addition, to these') and minor preposition usage issues, but these errors rarely impede communication. The control over grammar is generally sufficient for basic clarity. To reach the next level, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures with greater accuracy, producing a higher proportion of error-free sentences throughout the text.
