Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mark,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing today in reply to your previous letter in which you asked me to look for a job for you in London. A colleague of mine has told me about an opening in a local company called GameFame for the position of a game developer. The company has a huge team of developers and they create commercial iPhone games. The work involves working as a C# coder and integrating yourself in their large team of developers.

The job is fairly suitable for you because it requires a minimum experience of 3 years. Also, I know that you are an expert coder but working in such a big team will improve your skills even further. The company is located in London so it will also fulfill your desire to move here. Most importantly we would also be able to meet on a regular basis.

So, I suggest you to apply for this position as soon as possible. You can apply by following the directions on their website which is gamefame.uk.

I wish you all the best in the application process. Let me know if you need any help in doing so.

Looking forward to seeing you here.

Kind regards,

Wakas

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points of the task. You clearly explain the job at GameFame involving C# coding for iPhone games, state why it suits Mark due to his three years of experience and desire to move to London, and provide application instructions via the website. Your ideas are extended and supported well, such as noting how working in a big team will improve his skills further and mentioning personal benefits like meeting regularly. While the response fulfills the requirements nicely and maintains an appropriate semi-formal tone for a friend, some ideas could be extended slightly further to reach the highest bands, ensuring every point is fully elaborated with even more contextual detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. You start with an appropriate opening greeting, transition smoothly into the job description in the first body paragraph, discuss suitability and personal connection in the second, and conclude with actionable advice and a warm closing. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating each main idea into its own distinct section. Cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'Most importantly', and 'So' are employed to guide the reader through your thoughts, though there is a slight tendency to rely on basic transitional words rather than a wider variety of more sophisticated cohesive links.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'colleague', 'opening', 'developer', and 'application process'. You attempt some less common vocabulary items, such as 'integrating yourself' and 'fulfill your desire', which show an awareness of style and collocation appropriate for a personal letter. However, there are minor awkward word choices, such as 'fairly suitable' instead of 'ideal' or 'well-suited', and 'suggest you to apply' instead of 'suggest that you apply'. Spelling and word choice errors are occasional and do not impede communication, but refining these choices will elevate your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to handle multi-clause sentences such as 'I am writing today in reply to your previous letter in which you asked me to look for a job for you in London.' You show good control of verb tenses and punctuation overall. However, a few minor errors persist, such as the infinitive structure in 'suggest you to apply' (where 'suggest that you apply' or 'recommend applying' is grammatically accurate) and the minor omission or misuse of articles ('the position of a game developer' is acceptable, but 'for the position of game developer' is more natural). These errors are infrequent and communication is never impeded.
