Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Robert,
I hope you're doing well, It's been ages since we caught up. I'm writing to let you know that I saw an ad in our local newspaper about the job opening.
As you possess cooking skills and you're a chief, a restaurant is hiring a head chief near my house and is perfect for you. Some of the duties are also mentioned to perform as it's a full-time shift, you've to make indian cuisines, and not to forget keeping clean environment at all times.
I believe this job is perfect for you as you're a professional chief and can do all the duties on regular basis without any efforts. Moreover, you can use your previous job references during applying for this position. Furthermore, the restaurant's location is very convenient as it is near the bus station and shopping center.
It's clearly mentioned that you can apply walk-in and even through restaurant's website, just drop your resume and other important documents including references.
I hope you get this opportunity and succeed in life. Always keep in touch with me.
Yours lovingly,
Prabhnoor

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you identify a head-chef vacancy, describe duties such as preparing Indian cuisine and maintaining cleanliness, explain why Robert’s cooking experience suits it, and give two application routes. The letter also maintains an appropriate friendly tone. The suitability point is reasonably clear, but claims such as being able to do the duties “without any efforts” are broad rather than supported with specific evidence about his experience. Application details are also brief: you mention a walk-in application and the restaurant website, but do not say where or when to attend, or what to include beyond a résumé and references. The main information is present, with some parts less fully developed than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is organised into clear paragraphs that move from the reason for writing, to the vacancy and its suitability, and finally to application instructions and a closing. This gives the reader a logical progression, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Furthermore” help connect supporting points. The opening and sign-off also suit a personal letter. Some connections are less smooth: the duties are packed into one sentence, and “Moreover” and “Furthermore” perform similar linking work close together. Separating the job description from the application details and using more varied, natural transitions would make the progression feel more flexible and less formulaic.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the job and its requirements, with relevant terms such as “full-time shift,” “duties,” “references,” and “resume.” However, several noticeable word-choice, spelling, and collocation problems limit precision. “Chief” is used where the occupation is meant, and “head chief” is not the natural job title; “head chef” is appropriate. “Keeping clean environment” needs a more natural expression, while “apply walk-in” and “drop your resume” are awkward in this context. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but more accurate workplace vocabulary and natural collocations would make the letter clearer and more polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the reason clause “as you’re a professional…” and the conditional idea in “you can use your previous job references.” Most sentences communicate their intended meaning, but some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. In the opening, a comma joins two sentences in “I hope you’re doing well, It’s been ages”; use a full stop or semicolon. “A restaurant is hiring a head chief near my house and is perfect for you” has an unclear subject, and “you’ve to make” is not the standard form “you have to make.” Articles and sentence structure also need attention in “keeping clean environment.” More consistently accurate sentence boundaries and clause construction would improve control.
