IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A friend you made while you were studying abroad has written to ask you for help in finding a job in your country. You have heard about a job in a local company that might be suitable for him/her.
Write a letter to this friend. In your letter
- tell your friend about the job and what sort of work it involves
- say why you think the job would be suitable for him/her
- explain how to apply for the job
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ................. ,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Junaid,
Its been long time since you asked me to look for a job here in India. I shared your resume with the local hospital last week and they provided the offer letter.
The local hospital, Apple multi-speciality hospital, have a vacancy for a General Dentist. The offer letter contains all the duties you will have to provide such as routine check-ups, patient counsellings, record keeping and minor dental treatments.
I believe the job will suit you the most as you have done this work before back in Canada. I know how you look forward to provide comfort to people in need! The hospital setting will be perfect for you to upskill in other aspects of your profession.
The procedure to apply for the job is quite simple. You just need to go to their website and submit your ''expression of interest". There will be a short interview through a video call and you will be good to go.
I hope you do well in your interview and I am excited to see you in my town.
Warm regards,
Maqbool

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three points: it identifies a General Dentist vacancy, outlines duties such as check-ups and record keeping, explains the connection to your friend’s Canadian experience, and gives application steps. The friendly opening and closing also suit the purpose. The job description is clear, but the suitability explanation is less fully developed: “you have done this work before” and the chance to “upskill” are relevant, yet one specific skill or quality your friend brings would make the recommendation more convincing. The application instructions could also be more precise about where to find the vacancy or what information to submit. This covers the task well overall, with some ideas needing further support and detail.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information is arranged in a clear sequence: the job is introduced, its duties are described, the reasons it may suit your friend follow, and the application process comes next. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, while phrases such as “I believe” and “The procedure to apply” signal the purpose of each section. The progression is generally easy to follow, though some links between ideas feel abrupt—for example, the move from the friend’s previous work to the hospital being a place to “upskill.” A more explicit connection would strengthen the flow. The letter is coherent overall, but cohesion and referencing are not consistently smooth or flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a friendly job-related letter, including “vacancy,” “routine check-ups,” “record keeping,” “minor dental treatments,” and “expression of interest.” These choices communicate the role and application process clearly, and the tone remains appropriately warm. There are some imprecise or unnatural combinations, however: “duties you will have to provide” and “look forward to provide comfort” do not express the intended meanings naturally. “Patient counsellings” is also an awkward form in this context. These attempts at more specific vocabulary show useful range, but more accurate collocations and word forms would make the letter sound more fluent and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of straightforward sentences and more developed structures, such as “I believe the job will suit you the most as you have done this work before back in Canada.” Most meanings remain clear, and the paragraphing supports readability. Some grammatical errors persist, including “Its been long time” (missing apostrophe and article), “the hospital … have a vacancy” (subject–verb agreement), and “look forward to provide” (the verb pattern should use a gerund). The sentence about the offer letter and duties also has an unclear structure: it suggests the letter contains duties “you will have to provide.” Greater control of articles, agreement, and verb patterns, alongside more consistently accurate complex sentences, would improve precision.
