Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Smith,
I hope you are doing well. I am glad to hear that you are looking for a job in Canada. I recently heard about a job position that I think would be perfect for you.
A local company called Greenway Solutions is looking for an administrative assistant to join their team. The main responsibilities are to attend phone calls, replying to emails, arranging meetings and keeping company records up to date. It is full- time position, which could also help you to gain Canadian experience.
I believe you could be a strong candidate for this position because you have excellent communication skills and well organized. During our studying time I noticed you were great at managing task and assignments before due date. These particular qualities will be useful when dealing with customers problem.
To apply for this job you need to visit their website and look for job application form. You need to fill out that form along with uploading your recent resume and cover letter. I would suggest you to apply for this position as soon as possible.
Let me know what you think. I believe you should give a try.
Best wishes,
John

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three points clearly: you describe the administrative assistant role and its duties, explain why your friend may suit it, and give practical application steps. The personal reference to your friend’s communication skills and ability to manage assignments supports your recommendation, while the website, application form, résumé and cover letter make the process clear. The purpose and friendly tone are maintained throughout. To make the response more fully developed, add a little more specific information about the vacancy, such as where the company is located, when applications close, or where the job advertisement can be found. The suitability explanation could also connect your friend’s experience more directly to particular duties, such as arranging meetings or responding to customers.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The information follows a clear, logical sequence: you introduce the opportunity, describe the work, explain why your friend is suitable, and then outline how to apply. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “I believe” and “To apply for this job” guide the reader through the letter. The opening and closing also fit the friendly purpose. To make the progression more polished, link some details more explicitly—for example, connect the friend’s organisational ability directly to arranging meetings and maintaining records. The final encouragement, “I believe you should give a try,” is understandable but abrupt; a more complete closing thought would create a smoother finish. Overall, cohesion is effective, with room for slightly more natural transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including relevant workplace terms such as “administrative assistant,” “responsibilities,” “company records,” “resume” and “cover letter.” These choices make the job and application process easy to understand, and the friendly tone is appropriate. Some wording is less natural or precise, however: “attend phone calls” would usually be “answer phone calls,” and “customers problem” needs a more suitable plural or possessive form. “Job position” is also somewhat redundant, while “give a try” is an incomplete expression. These slips do not prevent communication, but more accurate collocations and a few more specific terms for the duties would show greater flexibility and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, such as “I believe you could be a strong candidate for this position because…” and “During our studying time I noticed…”. Most ideas remain clear, but some grammatical errors are present. In the list of duties, “are to attend phone calls, replying to emails, arranging meetings” mixes infinitive and -ing forms; use parallel forms, such as “answering calls, replying to emails and arranging meetings.” The sentence “you have excellent communication skills and well organized” needs a verb and parallel structure: “you have excellent communication skills and are well organised.” Also check articles and sentence completeness in “give a try.” More consistent control of these patterns would strengthen accuracy.
