Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Kayla,
I hope you are doing well in phillipines. I write this letter with immense joy; as my uncle's company has posted a Job opening here in Ontario, Canada. It's an Archeological Technologist position and the duties inlcudes; Travelling to the sites via Private Airplanes, Collecting data in Harsh winters, carrying excvated goods, researching & reporting them in office and Presenting it to the assigned manager.
I remember since you once mentioned that you have Bacherlor's in Archeology and before we met in Post-grad school you use to work in similar field of line for collecting data and enjoyed what you did. I truly belive this is really a great opportunity for you and none other than yourself is suitable to work here. Before, I forget to mention the critical detail like applying, please be advised to Email PDF of Resume to Company's HR: [redacted email] not later than October 21,2026 before 11:59 PM. Please be advised that you can absolutely use my name as a reference to atleast score an interview.
I wish you all the luck and can't wait to hear your response.
Best Wishes,
Mayra.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements: it describes the archaeological technologist role and its duties, explains the friend’s relevant degree and experience, and gives a clear application method and deadline. The personal reference offer also makes the advice useful and specific. Your reasons for suitability are supported by details from the friend’s background, so the purpose remains clear throughout. To strengthen the response further, explain a little more about what the company does or what the role offers, and make the connection between the friend’s past work and particular duties more explicit. Overall, the task is fully addressed, with relevant ideas extended, although some details are presented in a fairly general way.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information follows a sensible sequence: you introduce the vacancy, explain why Kayla is suited to it, provide application instructions, and close warmly. Paragraphing helps distinguish the job description from the recommendation and practical details, while phrases such as “I remember” and “Before I forget” guide the reader through the letter. The progression is clear, but some linking is slightly mechanical, and the long second paragraph combines suitability, application instructions, and the reference offer. Separate these into clearer units and use more natural transitions. Also ensure that references such as “them” in “researching & reporting them” have an unmistakable antecedent. This would make the cohesion more flexible and the organisation more polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “Archeological Technologist,” “Collecting data,” “excavated goods,” and “reference,” and the friendly tone suits a personal letter. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “Harsh winters” and “assigned manager.” However, noticeable spelling errors and awkward or imprecise combinations reduce accuracy: “inlcudes,” “excvated,” and “Bacherlor’s” are difficult to overlook, while “field of line” and “score an interview” are not natural expressions in this context. Capitalisation of ordinary words such as “Job” and “Private Airplanes” is also inconsistent. Check spelling carefully and favour established collocations to make your vocabulary more precise and fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “I remember since you once mentioned that…” and the sentence explaining the application deadline. The meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “I write this letter” would more naturally be “I am writing this letter,” and “the duties includes” has a subject–verb agreement error. “Before, I forget to mention” also needs a different clause structure, such as “Before I forget to mention…” Punctuation around the semicolon and the list of duties makes some sentences harder to follow. Aim for accurate, complete sentences before adding more complex structures.
