Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Darren,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing with regard to a job vacancy available at a local company in Hamilton, and I believe this might interest you.
It is a Retail Sales analyst position at Metro Canada, the job responsibilities include interpreting the sales data from the retail sales and making predictions and accordingly planning the inventory flow to the respective retail stores. It also requires basic understanding of tools such as Excel, SQL and Power BI, which I believe you know pretty well. To apply for this position, you need to mail a copy of your resume and cover letter to hiring manager at [redacted email].
I believe this position would be a perfect match for you, as you are good with numbers and data interpretation. Moreover, it is highly relevant to your academic background of sales and marketing and with your two years work experience as a Retail Sales supervisor makes you a right candidate.
I hope this helps. Let me know what you think, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best regards,
Ravi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a clear, friendly purpose. You explain the role at Metro Canada and describe its duties—analysing sales data, forecasting, and planning inventory—then connect the position to Darren’s skills and experience. The application instructions are also practical, including the resume, cover letter, and email address. These details make the advice relevant and sufficiently supported. To develop the ideas further, clarify whether the role is definitely available and add a little context about the company or application process, such as a deadline or where to find the full listing. Overall, the key information is clear, though a few details could be more fully developed and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the vacancy, describe the work and application method, explain why Darren is suited to it, and close warmly. Paragraphing helps separate the main purposes, while phrases such as “Moreover” and “I hope this helps” guide the reader through the letter. The friendly opening and sign-off also suit the relationship. Some linking is slightly abrupt: the application instructions appear in the same paragraph as the job description, before the suitability explanation, and “It also requires” could refer either to the position or its responsibilities. A more deliberate paragraph break and clearer reference would make the progression smoother. Cohesion is effective overall, with only minor opportunities to make connections more flexible and precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing the role, including “interpreting the sales data,” “making predictions,” “inventory flow,” and “data interpretation.” The language is generally clear and appropriately professional, while the greeting and closing preserve a friendly tone. However, some choices are imprecise or awkwardly collocated, which limits the naturalness and flexibility of the vocabulary. For example, “academic background of sales and marketing” would be more idiomatic as “academic background in sales and marketing,” and “right candidate” is less polished than “strong candidate.” “Retail Sales analyst” also needs consistent capitalization and a more natural job-title form. Aim to use precise, conventional collocations alongside the relevant technical terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter includes a useful mix of simple and more complex structures, such as “I believe this might interest you” and the explanation beginning “as you are good with numbers.” Most sentences are easy to understand, and the overall control of tense and sentence formation is good. A few errors remain. The sentence “It is a Retail Sales analyst position at Metro Canada, the job responsibilities include…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma; use a full stop, semicolon, or conjunction. In “with your two years work experience … makes you,” the subject and verb do not agree, and the phrase needs a possessive form (“two years’ work experience”). Also, “mail a copy … to hiring manager” needs an article before “hiring manager.” Correcting these points would make the otherwise clear writing more consistently accurate.
