Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Arjun,

I hope you are doing well and enjoying Neatherland's weather.

I am writing to let you know that I heard of a Senior Financial Analyst position being available in Mahindra through my friend who is currently employed in the same company. The position opened recently and and they will start accepting resumes by the end of October. The job involves working on monthly budgeting, planning and quaterly forecasting expenses for Canadian market. It requires expertise in Microsoft Excel and Powerpoint along with good communication skills to help stakeholders make decision. I feel you would be a great candidate for it as I have seen you being a wizard for Excel and your love for numbers. Moreover, you excellent presentation skills would be a great asset for the communication requirement.

To apply for the role, look up for the position on the company's career webpage and upload your resume and cover letter. I would recommend adding a few reference letters from our university professors as well to make a stronger profile.

I wish you all the very best for the interview and would love to meet you if you plan to take this role and move to Canada.

Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you describe the Senior Financial Analyst role and its budgeting and forecasting duties, explain why Arjun’s Excel ability and presentation skills suit it, and give practical application steps through the company careers page. These details make the advice relevant and persuasive. The recommendation to include university references adds useful support, although it would be stronger to clarify whether these are requested or optional. You could also make the job information more complete by specifying where to find the vacancy or who to contact, if known. Overall, the purpose and friendly tone are clear, with the main ideas extended and supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The information follows a clear, useful progression: you introduce the vacancy, describe its duties and requirements, explain why Arjun is a good fit, and finish with application advice and a warm closing. Paragraphing separates the main stages effectively, and links such as “Moreover” and “To apply for the role” help guide the reader. The sequence is easy to follow without needing to reread. To make the organisation even more polished, separate the job description and suitability explanation into distinct paragraphs, and use a slightly more natural transition into the final good wishes. The letter’s overall progression is strong, though a few links between ideas could be smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a professional recommendation, including “Senior Financial Analyst,” “monthly budgeting,” “quarterly forecasting,” “stakeholders,” and “communication skills.” The phrase “a wizard for Excel” adds a friendly, personal touch, while the job-related terms make the role sound specific. Some word choices and collocations are less natural or precise: “look up for the position” would be better as “search for the position,” and “make a stronger profile” could be expressed as “strengthen your application.” There are also spelling slips in “Neatherland’s” and “quaterly.” Greater accuracy with these items would make your otherwise appropriate vocabulary more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the reason-and-result structure in “I feel you would be a great candidate for it as…” and the purpose clause “to help stakeholders make decision.” Most of the message remains clear, but some grammatical errors prevent consistently strong control. For example, “your excellent presentation skills” needs a possessive form such as “your excellent,” but the sentence requires “your excellent presentation skills” only if the preceding verb is corrected to “Moreover, your excellent presentation skills…”; “make decision” needs a plural or article, and “the company's career webpage” would be more natural with “company’s careers webpage.” The duplicated “and” and missing space after “October.” also affect punctuation and accuracy. Proofreading these details would improve control.
