Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Richard,
Hie, I’m writing to share a job vacancy that you may find appealing.
There’s an Electrician vacancy at Tongaat Huletts, Zimbabwe. My cousin works there and he is the one who told me about it. Since you have always wanted to work here, I think this is the right opportunity. The vacancy is also open to international candidates therefore you are a legible applicant.
The job mainly involves installation and maintenance of Electrical equipment such as electric motors. You have always found electric motors very amusing and you were the best student in the Electric motors module therefore I think you will enjoy this position very much. The entry salary on the advert is very appealing. I understand you have many financial burdens including taking care of your siblings, which is a major reason for you have to apply for this job. I spoke to my cousin about you and he said he’d be more than happy to recommend you for the position.
I will send you the link where you have to apply on WhatsApp. All you have to do is create an account on their online portal and upload your CV and Academic qualifications. All the best my friend.
Kind regards,
Carl

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three points clearly: you describe the electrician vacancy and its duties, explain why Richard’s experience and interests make it suitable, and give practical application steps. Details such as his strong performance in the electric-motors module and the online portal make the advice relevant and personal. The recommendation from your cousin also adds useful support. To make the ideas even more fully developed, clarify the company or role details where possible—for example, the location and the advertised salary are mentioned, but not specified. The explanation of his financial responsibilities is understandable, though it could be expressed more tactfully in a friendly letter. Overall, the purpose and tone remain clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear, useful sequence: you introduce the vacancy, explain the duties and suitability, then describe how to apply. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and links such as “therefore” and “Since” make relationships between ideas easy to follow. The letter also has an appropriate greeting and closing. Some connections could be smoother: the sentence about the salary and Richard’s financial burdens shifts quickly from job benefits to personal circumstances, and the final application instructions could be separated into a more distinct closing paragraph. A few transitions are slightly repetitive, but the overall progression is logical and the reader can follow the advice without difficulty.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including relevant terms such as “installation and maintenance,” “international candidates,” “online portal,” and “recommend.” These help communicate the role and application process. However, some word choices or forms are inaccurate or unnatural: “legible applicant” should be “eligible applicant,” and “electric motors very amusing” does not express that he finds them interesting. “Academic qualifications” would usually be written in lower case in this context. “Hie” is also an unsuitable spelling for the greeting. These errors do not prevent understanding, but they show that less common vocabulary is not always controlled precisely. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling and word forms before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, such as “Since you have always wanted to work here, I think this is the right opportunity” and the sentence explaining the application process. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. In “a major reason for you have to apply,” the pattern should be “a major reason why you have to apply” or “a major reason for applying.” The phrase “the one who told me about it” is grammatically sound, while “the entry salary on the advert” would benefit from a clearer sentence structure. Check punctuation around longer sentences and use consistent capitalization for general terms such as “electrical equipment.” More accurate control of these patterns would strengthen the letter.
