Student answer (Band 5.5)

In this modern era, everyone wants their house and workplace to be clean and to groom themselves. People judge you to their beauty and cleanliness rather than your skills. In my opinion, I completely agree with this view because it can have several positive effects on individuals and society.

To start with, when everything is in an organized place, it is very easy to find objects. Secondly, this reduces time wasted looking for documents, tools, clothes, and other things. It saves time. For example, at work, organized files help employees find information quickly and complete tasks faster.

To commence with, a messy environment can make people feel uncomfortable or distracted. Furthermore, a clean and organized home creates a peaceful atmosphere. For instance, after a busy day at work, coming home to a tidy room can help a person relax. A tidy workplace allows employees to concentrate better. It can also reduce mistakes and improve efficiency.

For example, a worker with an organized desk can focus on important tasks instead of searching for paperwork.

To conclude, I strongly agree that keeping homes and workplaces tidy is important. It reduces stress and gives comfort at work, which improves productivity and saves time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear opinion and providing relevant reasons. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which severely limits the development of ideas. While the points regarding efficiency and mental well-being are relevant, they are presented in a somewhat repetitive manner and lack the depth required for a higher band. Because the response is only 200 words, it fails to fully develop the arguments, resulting in a partial response to the task requirements. To improve, you must expand on your examples and provide more detailed explanations to meet the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To start with', 'Secondly', and 'Furthermore' to link your points. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly awkward, as 'To commence with' is used incorrectly to introduce a new point rather than the beginning of the essay. The paragraphing is sufficient, but the overall flow is somewhat mechanical due to the repetitive structure of the sentences. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they are used in the correct context would enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. Phrases like 'clean and to groom themselves' and 'organized place' are functional but lack the sophistication expected at higher bands. There is some repetition of words like 'organized' and 'tidy'. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to incorporate more precise, topic-specific vocabulary and collocations. For example, instead of 'clean', you could use 'pristine' or 'clutter-free'. You also need to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary to express your ideas with more nuance and precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and compound sentences. While the grammar is generally accurate and easy to follow, there is a lack of complex sentence structures. There are minor errors, such as 'People judge you to their beauty', where the preposition 'by' would be more appropriate. The punctuation is generally correct, but the overall grammatical range is limited. To improve, you should practice incorporating more complex structures, such as conditional sentences or relative clauses, and ensure that your use of prepositions and verb forms is consistently accurate throughout the text.
