Student answer (Band 7.5)

Some people believe that it is important to keep our homes and workplaces tidy and organised. I strongly agree with this opinion because a clean environment can improve our productivity, reduce stress, and make daily life more comfortable.

Firstly, keeping things organised helps people work more efficiently. When everything is in the correct place, it is easier to find important items and complete tasks without wasting time. For example, an employee who keeps their desk and documents organised can quickly find the information they need. As a result, they can concentrate better and finish their work more effectively.

Secondly, a tidy environment can have a positive effect on people’s mental health. A messy home or workplace can make people feel stressed and uncomfortable, whereas a clean and organised place can create a feeling of calmness. For instance, after a busy day at work, coming home to a clean room can help a person relax and enjoy their free time.

However, maintaining a tidy environment does not mean that everything has to be perfectly arranged all the time. People have different lifestyles and may not always have enough time to clean and organise everything. Therefore, it is important to find a practical balance and keep the most frequently used areas clean and organised.

In conclusion, I believe that keeping our homes and workplaces tidy is very important. It saves time, improves concentration, and reduces stress. Although perfection is unnecessary, everyone should make an effort to maintain a reasonably clean and organised environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in the introduction and supporting it with relevant arguments regarding productivity and mental health. The ideas are well-developed, and the inclusion of a counter-argument in the fourth paragraph adds depth and balance to the discussion. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points and reinforces the initial stance. The response is focused and relevant throughout, meeting all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. The use of referencing is clear, and the paragraphing is logical and consistent. The flow of information is natural, making the text easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'productivity', 'mental health', 'efficiently', and 'maintaining a tidy environment'. While the vocabulary is accurate and conveys the intended meaning clearly, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or idiomatic usage that would characterize the highest band. However, the word choice is precise and there are no errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a good command of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as the conditional structure 'When everything is in the correct place, it is easier to find...' and the contrastive structure 'A messy home... can make people feel stressed... whereas a clean and organised place can create...'. The punctuation is accurate, and the majority of sentences are error-free. The control over grammar is consistent throughout the text.
