Student answer (Band 7.0)

Many believe that keeping your home and workplace tidy, with everything neatly organized and in its proper place, is essential. This is mainly because having a clean workplace creates a positive atmosphere for employees, and at home, it gives a sense of relaxation and maintains a healthy and happy lifestyle.

When it comes to working at the office, there are plenty of reasons why HR teams highlight the importance of a tidy workstation in employees’ work lives. These days, most companies avoid spending their budget on renting large office spaces as, since they usually are constrained by limited office space which can sometimes lead to unnecessary chaos when trying to locate documents like files. As a result, this disorganization can cause delays in meetings or deadlines. To add more, when the workplace is well-organized and tidy, with employee names assigned to boxes, it makes things more efficient for everyone and ultimately creates a positive vibe among them.

On the other hand, keeping your home clean and organized is important for health and safety. Dust, dirt, and clutter can cause allergies and asthma and even contribute to spreading illnesses. Keeping your home clean and organized helps to reduce these risks. Furthermore, it also reduces stress levels, promotes relaxation, and enhances overall mental well-being. To add more, a clean home is more than just a visual delight; it is a cornerstone of a healthy and happy lifestyle.

All in all, a tidy workspace gives peace of mind while working on projects with deadlines and makes it a pleasant place to work. While walking into a space that looks and smells clean can lift your spirits and make your daily routines more enjoyable without worry.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses all parts of the prompt by exploring the importance of tidiness in both the home and the workplace. A clear position is established in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. The writer provides relevant reasons and examples, such as discussing how disorganization in offices can lead to delays in meetings and how cleanliness at home reduces health risks like allergies and asthma. Ideas are adequately extended and supported, demonstrating a solid understanding of the topic. Although the development could occasionally be deeper to reach the highest bands, the response thoroughly covers the required scope and presents a well-reasoned argument from start to finish.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently structured, with distinct paragraphs dedicated to the introduction, the workplace, the home, and the conclusion. The writer employs various cohesive devices effectively, such as 'This is mainly because', 'As a result', and 'On the other hand'. However, there are minor repetitive transitions like 'To add more' used in consecutive paragraphs, which slightly detracts from the variety of cohesive devices. Overall, paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow from the first sentence to the last.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task with some flexibility and precision, using terms such as 'positive atmosphere', 'constrained by limited office space', 'mental well-being', and 'visual delight'. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary, though occasional inaccuracies in word choice or collocation appear, such as writing 'spread illnesses' instead of 'spreading illnesses' (though minor) or slightly clunky phrasing like 'visual delight'. Spelling and word-choice errors are rare and do not impede communication. With a slightly wider deployment of more sophisticated, uncommon lexical items, the score could be higher.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a good control of grammar overall. Examples of complex structures include 'This is mainly because having a clean workplace creates a positive atmosphere...' and 'While walking into a space that looks and smells clean can lift your spirits...'. The majority of sentences are grammatically accurate. There are a few minor slips, such as an incomplete sentence structure in the final paragraph starting with 'While walking into...', which functions as a dependent clause without a main clause attached to it. Nevertheless, punctuation and grammar are generally well handled and do not impede communication.
