IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say it is important to keep your home and your workplace tidy, with everything organised and in the correct place.

What is your opinion about this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

As per my opinion yes it is a right thought. Because it gives a first impression about your personality and the first impression is the last impression.

keeping your workplace neat and clean shows your interest and your dedication toward work and the company.

It make your profile much impressive comparatively to the others so is the home as well. What i think is being neat and clean is the way to stay

motivated and shows how keen you are in the things you are doing on daily basis.

And while living in cooperate society it creates an impression on people who are working with you and they will feel comfortable visiting you at your house or at your workplace in office.

People usually do not do this because no body is watching or judging them at home. But if you do so it can be merged or became your habit if you are only faking it to impress people.

Being tidy brings more self confidence and a person feels more self esteemed than because they are carrying a trait which is completely different from other people.

In short it will bring a prosperity in one's life because somehow you will be prioritized on those not having this.

It is the basic rule of living to keep your space neat and clean and i think this is one of the main trait that makes human beings different from the animals because we know what is wrong and what is right.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that keeping one's home and workplace tidy is important. The writer extends several relevant ideas regarding first impressions, professional dedication, self-confidence, and personal motivation. For instance, the student notes that a neat workspace 'shows your interest and your dedication toward work and the company' and suggests that tidiness boosts self-esteem. However, the ideas lack deep development and tend to generalise without specific personal examples or concrete illustrations. The conclusion also introduces a rather sweeping moral distinction regarding human beings and animals without thorough substantiation. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear personal stance maintained throughout. However, the essay lacks proper paragraphing, as it is presented in one solid block of text instead of distinct paragraphs for the introduction, body points, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or basic, such as 'In short' and 'And while living'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, for example, the phrase 'so is the home as well' lacks a fully developed structural connection to the preceding sentence. While the progression of ideas is generally understandable, the lack of paragraph breaks significantly restricts the overall organizational score, placing it firmly at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts. There are attempts to use less common items and collocations, such as 'dedication toward work', 'cooperate society' (intended as corporate), and 'self esteemed'. However, there are notable word choice errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'As per my opinion', 'make your profile much impressive comparatively to the others', and 'bring a prosperity'. Spelling and word formation errors, like 'cooperate' instead of 'corporate', and repetitive use of basic vocabulary items indicate limitations in lexical control. These inaccuracies do not entirely impede communication, aligning the response with a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is weak throughout the text. There are frequent punctuation and capitalization errors, such as starting sentences with lowercase letters ('keeping', 'It make', 'What i think', 'And while'). Grammatical errors include subject-verb agreement issues like 'It make your profile' and 'trait that makes human beings different', as well as awkward preposition usage and missing articles ('living in cooperate society'). While the reader can decipher the intended meaning, the high frequency of basic grammatical errors and lack of control over punctuation prevent the response from achieving a higher band, making a Band 5.0 appropriate.
