Student answer (Band 6.5)

I strongly agree that maintaining an organised home and workplace is important. A tidy environment not only makes daily activities more convenient but can also improve concentration, productivity and overall well-being.

Firstly, keeping things in their proper places can save a considerable amount of time. In a well-organised home, people can easily find esssential items such as keys, documents or electronic devices instead of wasting several minutes searching for them. The same principle applies to the workplace. For instance, an employee who keeps files, stationery and digital documents systematically arranged can aacess information quickly and complete tasks more efficiently. Consequently, good organisation can reduce unnecessary stress and make people feel more in control of their responsibilties.

Secondly, cleanliness and order can have a positive effect on people's concentration. A cluttered desk or untidy room can be distracting, particularly when someone needs to study or perform a demanding task. By contrast, an orderly environment creates fewer visual distractions and allows people to focus on what they are doing. For example, when students keep their study materials organised, they can begin their revision immediately rather than spending time looking for books or notes.

However, I don't believe that everything needs to be perfectly arranged at all times. Excessive attention to tidiness may itself become time-cosuming and stressful. It is therefore more practical to maintain a reasonable level of organisation, rather than constantly trying to achieve perfection.

In conclusion, I believe that keping homes and workplaces tidy is highly beneficial because it saves time, reduces distractions and improves productivity. Nevertheless, organisation should be practical rather than excessive.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task by clearly stating the writer's opinion on keeping the home and workplace tidy, supported by well-developed ideas and relevant examples. The position is clearly maintained throughout the essay. The writer explores both the benefits of organisation, such as saving time and reducing stress, and includes a nuanced counter-argument acknowledging that excessive tidiness can be counter-productive. Ideas are well-extended with specific examples, such as employees keeping files systematically arranged and students organising study materials. The response meets all criteria for Band 7, as it addresses all parts of the task with a clear position throughout, though the supporting points could be slightly further extended to reach Band 8 standards.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introduction that outlines the writer's stance, followed by well-sequenced body paragraphs introduced by appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'However'. The conclusion neatly ties the main points together. Cohesive devices are used effectively and flexibly, though referencing and paragraphing are standard rather than fully skilful. Overall, the arrangement of ideas is coherent and easy to follow, making this a solid performance for Band 7.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, using less common items such as 'systematically arranged', 'demanding task', and 'excessive attention'. There is an adequate range for the task, but there are a few minor spelling and typographical errors, such as 'esssential' instead of essential and 'aacess' instead of access, along with 'time-cosuming'. These errors do not impede communication, and the writer attempts less common vocabulary with moderate success, placing this response comfortably in the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range. Due to these spelling slips, a score of 6.5 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over grammatical structures. Sentences such as 'A tidy environment not only makes daily activities more convenient but can also improve concentration...' show effective use of complex structures. There are frequent error-free sentences, alongside a few minor lapses such as 'keping' in the conclusion. Grammar and punctuation are generally well controlled, and the errors do not impede communication. The overall control of grammar aligns well with the descriptors for Band 7.
