Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by giving a clear opinion on whether keeping homes and workplaces tidy is important, and supports this with reasons and examples. The introduction clearly states the intention to cover the advantages and disadvantages, although the body paragraphs focus entirely on the benefits. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly in the third paragraph regarding saving time and organizing files. However, the first body paragraph contains some overgeneralizations and awkward expressions, such as claiming that untidiness indicates a lack of maturity or family discipline. While the position is clear throughout, the lack of discussion on the potential disadvantages hinted at in the introduction prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, meeting the requirements of a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with logical progression, especially in the third paragraph which flows well from the topic sentence to supporting examples. Paragraphing is used to separate ideas, though the introductory paragraph is quite weak in managing cohesive devices and transitions. Cohesive devices are sometimes used mechanically or inaccurately, such as 'To start with' combined with awkward phrasing, and the transition 'Subsequently another major' in the third paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, but occasional abrupt shifts between sentences hinder the overall flow. While the organization is clear enough to follow the writer's line of thought without confusion, the mechanical nature of the cohesion places this text firmly at a Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'mismanaged', 'designated places', and 'efficiently'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices throughout the text, such as 'dis-advantageous site', 'stink smell', and 'etiquettes' (used as a countable noun). The writer attempts less common vocabulary, but these attempts often result in inaccuracies in collocation and word form, such as 'it's improve your health' or 'tesnions'. Despite these errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended message without heavily impeding communication, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and article use, such as 'Clean and neat home gives you', 'if you were not cleaning', 'It's took a while', and 'in home and workplace'. Punctuation errors also occur, including missing commas and incorrect apostrophe usage. Although these errors occasionally cause the reader to pause, they rarely impede overall communication. The presence of both correct complex structures alongside frequent basic errors aligns with the Band 5.5 descriptor.
