Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt only partially, and the length requirement is not met, as the essay contains 198 words which is significantly short of the 250-word minimum. The writer presents a position and mentions general reasons for keeping a home or workplace tidy, such as mental well-being and avoiding misplaced items. However, the ideas remain limited and under-developed, lacking sufficient extension, rich examples, or a broader exploration of the topic. To move to a higher band, the writer must ensure the essay meets the required word count and provides fully developed ideas with deeper analysis and more comprehensive supporting examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation with an introduction, supporting body paragraphs, and a concluding sentence, but there is no clear overall progression throughout the text. Paragraphing is attempted, though transitions and cohesive devices are somewhat repetitive and mechanical, such as the repeated use of 'major factor'. Referencing can also be unclear at times, and the flow between sentences can feel abrupt. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to employ a wider range of cohesive devices more accurately and logically structure the progression of arguments from one paragraph to the next to create a smoother, more natural reading experience.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to express basic thoughts on the topic, featuring words like 'organized', 'maintenance', and 'satisfaction'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, such as 'whay' instead of 'why', 'yhe' instead of 'the', and awkward collocations like 'tidy place is that it present a sense of mental well _being'. These errors and spelling slips sometimes cause minor difficulty or distraction for the reader. To improve in this area, the writer should focus on expanding their range of vocabulary, practicing correct word forms and spelling, and ensuring appropriate collocations for common IELTS topics.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few attempts at complex forms that often contain errors. There are frequent grammatical issues, including missing articles ('present a sense', 'tidy place'), incorrect verb forms ('This is always gives'), and punctuation errors such as spacing before commas and periods. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To reach the next band, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures and improve overall accuracy by checking verb agreements, article usage, and punctuation conventions.
