IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say it is important to keep your home and your workplace tidy, with everything organised and in the correct place.
What is your opinion about this?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many people put great emphasis on keeping their home and workplace, neat and clean. I strongly agree with this opinion because I think it helps with more productivity and creativity at work, and at home it keeps your mind fresh and relaxed.
It is a popular opinion that you become what you surround yourself with. If your surroundings are clean and well organised, your mental health will reflect that. When your mind is calm and relaxed you will be more productive at work. You will notice that you will get more tasks done in less time. If you are an artist, you will feel more creative at your workplace. Your mind will be flooded with great ideas.
Similarly, when you come to a well put together tidy house, no matter how much you are tired you feel relaxed and calm.
On the contrary, if your space is cluttered and disorganised, that is how you are going to feel inside your mind. You will be a chaos at work as well as at your home. This will also effect the people around you. You mind not have anything productive to offer at work. You will feel more tired.
I have seen that every successful person has a well kept home, and a clean workspace, It greatly helps them focus on what they want to achieve in life.
Any interview that I came across of a writer, they always mention that decluttering their space made them so much more creative and that's when they came up with the idea for their book.
Alternatively, one of my friend is always anxious and chaotic. I used to wonder why is she this way, why is she never relaxed and calm. Then one day, I happened to vist her house and I finally knew why is she the way she is. Her home was a mess and so was her mind. I gave her one piece of advice, to clean her house and organise everything in place. One week later she called me and thanked me that she is feeling so much better now. She even told me that she is also able to make better decisions for her kids now. And that her children are also much more happier and relaxed.
Finally I will say cleaner space make the mind clearer, which is beneficial for yourself.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position on the importance of maintaining a tidy home and workplace, supporting the argument with relevant ideas. The overall stance is maintained throughout the essay. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or rely on broad generalisations rather than deep extension. For instance, the claims about artists and writers having flooded ideas are stated rather than fully explored with robust examples. To move towards higher bands, the writer needs to extend these supporting points with more specific detail and elaboration, ensuring every major premise is thoroughly unpacked.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear central topic introduced in the opening paragraph. Ideas are generally ordered in a logical sequence, moving from workplace productivity to home relaxation, and contrasting this with the effects of clutter. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the text, though some paragraphs are quite brief and choppy. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'Similarly', 'On the contrary', and 'Finally', but referencing and transitions can occasionally feel mechanical. To reach higher bands, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between paragraphs and ideas to establish a more seamless progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate straightforward ideas about organisation and mental health. There are attempts to use less common items and descriptive phrases like 'well put together', 'cluttered and disorganised', and 'decluttering'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies, word choice slips, and awkward collocations that reflect limitations in vocabulary control, such as 'You mind not have anything productive' instead of 'You might not', 'this would also effect' instead of 'affect', and 'one of my friend' instead of 'one of my friends'. Spelling and phrasing errors occur periodically, which prevents the writing from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional structures and relative clauses. There are a number of grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'cleaner space make', missing articles, and awkward phrasing such as 'why is she this way'. Punctuation is also slightly flawed in places, such as comma splices or missing commas after introductory phrases. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede overall communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer must exercise greater accuracy across a wider variety of complex structures and eliminate recurrent basic grammatical slips.
