Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you in the pink of health. I am writing in regards to an advert that was advertised in the magazine about the hiring of care taker of a six- year- old toddler.

I would be grateful for this opportunity as I adore children and I like to spend time with them while supporting in their school homework, playing games with them as well as doing entertaining activities like painting.

Since, I have a professional experience of 4 years in foster and care department, I believe that I would be ideal for this job. Moreover, I have a congenial and benevolent personality to get along with the children easily.

Furthermore, this golden opportunity of travelling to Australia and living there would enhance my linguistic skills and give me an international exposure. In my leisure time, I would visit tourist attraction destinations and also I can help you in the household chores.

Looking forward for your positive response.

Yours faithfully,

Juhi Nayak

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for the job, provide relevant professional background, and outline your plans for your free time in Australia. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention your experience in the 'foster and care department', providing a specific example of a task you handled would have strengthened your candidacy. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Since' to connect your ideas. The progression of information is clear, moving from the purpose of the letter to your qualifications and finally to your personal plans. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct topics. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between sentences feels slightly more natural, as some of the linking words feel a bit mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'congenial and benevolent personality' and 'international exposure' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as referring to a six-year-old as a 'toddler' (a toddler is typically aged 1–3) and the slightly awkward phrasing 'advert that was advertised'. Additionally, 'in the pink of health' is an idiom that is generally too informal for a professional job application letter. Expanding your range of topic-specific collocations related to childcare would further improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'hiring of care taker' (should be 'hiring of a caretaker') and 'Looking forward for your positive response' (should be 'Looking forward to'). The punctuation is generally accurate, though there is an unnecessary space in 'six- year- old'. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on preposition usage and article consistency, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms to demonstrate greater control.
