Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing with regards to an advertisement you recently published in "The Latest" magazine seeking help to live with a family for six months.

To begin with, I am an international student living in Australia for the past one year and pursuing "Early Childhood Education and Support Work" education at the university of Perth. This job not only help me with financially, but also would be beneficial for my course to gain some valuable experience.

As I earlier stated, my education is completely suitable for this position. In my last summer break, I did 3 month volunteership in a local old age home, and also looked after offsprings. I understand such kind of jobs require lots of patiences. If needed, I can provide some references from my professor about my work ethics.

During my free time, I would like to explore Australia, visit local attractions, and learn more about Australian culture. I would also be happy to help your family with light household chores whenever needed.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Gaurav

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for the job, detail your relevant background in early childhood education, and outline your plans for free time. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, some ideas could be developed further; for instance, while you mention your education, providing a specific example of how you have handled a challenging situation with a child would have strengthened your candidacy. Overall, the response is well-focused and addresses the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'As I earlier stated', and 'During my free time' to transition between ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, the use of some linking phrases is slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'pursuing', 'beneficial', and 'valuable experience'. There are some minor errors in word choice and form, such as 'volunteership' (which should be 'volunteer work') and 'offsprings' (which is an unnatural choice in this context; 'children' is preferred). Additionally, 'patiences' should be the uncountable noun 'patience'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and maintain a professional tone throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'This job not only help me with financially' (should be 'helps me financially') and 'living in Australia for the past one year' (should be 'have been living'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. You show an attempt to use complex structures, but control is inconsistent. Increasing your focus on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy in future tasks.
